Jobbeschreibung

European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X‑ray laser, which produces X‑rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

The EuXFEL “Strategy 2030+” identifies various development programs, which are ongoing or about to start, aiming at short- to mid-term enhancements to current capabilities and user experience. It also foresees programs, with the purpose of developing or qualifying technology for a complete facility upgrade during the next decade. This upgrade will bring advanced X‑ray photon delivery modes, a higher number of pulses-per-second on sample and attosecond X‑ray pulses, to name a few features. Naturally, this demands a new generation of experimental optical drive laser source (pump-probe laser) to be developed. All laser-related needs, both mid- and long-term, will be addressed within a laser development program starting in 2025.

In particular, for the development of next generation pump-probe lasers, we are seeking to employ a Laser Scientist.

The Position

Working closely with the program manager, laser-group staff and collaborators at EuXFEL and external, the candidate will:

  • Lead a project team for the development of demonstrator systems of the next generation European XFEL instrument specific pump-probe laser solutions.
  • Perform analysis, identifying the individual optical laser requirements of the different scientific instruments in the future.
  • Identify suitable 1µm wavelength, high power ultrafast laser technologies for highly reliable and low maintenance 24/7 laser operation and qualify them.
  • Provide conceptual laser designs fulfilling the requirements while taking into account advanced X‑ray photon delivery modes (high duty cycle or continuous, arbitrary pulse sequences).
  • Interface with other projects within the program, addressing generation and delivery of THz and tunable fs-UV radiation, based on the pump-probe laser.

The project entails full proof of concept, including conversion methods (e.g. OPA, OPCPA), direct compression, timing stabilization, beamline and instrument integration, control system integration and all engineering solutions required for documented and upgrade-ready designs.

Requirements

  • A degree and PhD in photonics, applied physics or a similar discipline.
  • A broad theoretical and practical knowledge base and proven hands‑on experience with all relevant high power and ultrafast laser technologies and the associated measurement and characterization methods.
  • At least 5 years of project and leadership experience in academia, industry or both. Successfully completed projects will support the application.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work in a multilingual, multidisciplinary team, with English as the working language. Knowledge of German is considered an asset.

Application

Please apply online and provide your CV and a motivation letter in English as well as any reference letters.

The European XFEL GmbH is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer and we promote and support diverse and heterogenous teams. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants.
