Toshiba is recruiting a Hydrogen Systems (Senior) Research Engineer for its new Regenerative Innovation Centre (RIC). The main focus of RIC is on innovation and technology development relevant to green and digital transformation, including carbon neutrality, carbon negativity, and circular economy initiatives, emphasizing restoration, renewal, and sustainability to benefit ecosystems, societies, and individuals. RIC operates not only in the EU and UK but also in Japan and globally.

The successful candidate will research and develop advanced technologies in these areas through proactive communication with Toshiba Corporation in Japan, global business and academic partners, and customers. Responsibilities include proposing projects for externally funded initiatives with key partners in the EMEA region, collaborating with Toshiba’s business divisions, and producing high-quality patent applications and technical publications as needed.

This role offers an opportunity to drive growth in the field of carbon-neutral, carbon-negative, and regenerative innovation, supported by Toshiba, a leading company in electronics, power generation, power distribution, functional materials, batteries, digital, and services.

Location: Germany, primarily Aachen, with Dusseldorf as necessary.

Target Technologies: Hydrogen systems for green and digital transformations.

Role:

Research and development on hydrogen systems utilizing cell materials developed by Toshiba Corporation, including next-generation cell materials, cell-stack design, prototyping, testing, system integration, management for water electrolysis and fuel-cell systems, data handling, recycling, and joint evaluation with potential customers or academic partners, in collaboration with Toshiba’s hydrogen business and R&D units.

The role requires a deep understanding of energy and hydrogen systems, electrolysis and fuel-cell technologies, materials, control algorithms for system management, and a willingness to learn and collaborate across functions.

Basic Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct industry-applied R&D, including innovative research and advanced development in the target technology.
  • Network with Toshiba’s business and R&D divisions, partners, and academia.
  • Propose projects for external funding in the EU or locally, and participate in field trials as proof of concept, engaging with academia and industry experts.
  • Produce intellectual property, journals, and conference papers.
  • Investigate relevant standardization activities for technological features.
  • Support RIC’s deliverables in internal and external collaborative projects.

Basic Key Qualifications and Skills:

  • Extensive technical knowledge and hands-on skills in the target technology field.
  • Ability to identify R&D opportunities aligned with technological and business challenges.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills.
  • PhD (or near completion) in electrical/electronic engineering, systems engineering, materials engineering, or related fields.
  • Ability to work with engineers globally and a broad understanding of global organizational work.
  • Excellent team player with experience in collaborative projects.
  • Strong English communication skills.
  • German language skills are a plus.
