Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!

Since its foundation in 2019, the Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures has been dedicated to the protection and security of critical infrastructures on Earth. We develop concepts, processes and technologies that strengthen and improve the resilience of organisations and systems. In doing so, we focus on people, technology and the system as a whole.

Critical infrastructures are essential for the state and society. The aim of the Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures is to protect them and thus ensure the secure supply of society in a dynamic world. The institute develops concepts based on the resilience of infrastructures against current and future threats. Digital twins are used to identify potential threats, determine the situational protection status and analyse potential measures to minimise the impact over the entire resilience cycle. At the same time, the digital twins are used for strategic adaptation to future threats.

What awaits you at the institute
We offer you the opportunity to contribute your scientific skills in the field of modelling and describing the physical protection of critical infrastructures. The aim is to expand our basic research and enable its application in practice. We offer a supportive environment for innovative research and development. Here you can develop yourself and work on your personal qualifications, e.g. as part of a doctorate.

Your tasks include

  • You will familiarise yourself intensively with the physical security of infrastructures and identify open research questions, especially with regard to GIS-based structure recognition.
  • Building on this, you will continue the development of an existing model to describe security systems.
  • You develop a simulation for attack-specific vulnerability analysis and risk analysis of critical infrastructures.
  • Finally, you will extend the framework with a tool that integrates the terrain information and structure of safety systems into the simulations based on geoinformation.
  • You are responsible for evaluating the framework using a sample infrastructure in cooperation with companies and/or critical infrastructure operators.
  • Together with your colleagues, you will present the results in scientific papers in journals and at conferences.

What you bring with you

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master / Diploma Uni) in natural sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics) or engineering (e.g. from the fields of rescue engineering, safety engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) or other degree programmes relevant to the position.
  • Good expertise in the field of risk analysis, specialising in security research and/or in the application of risk and disaster management methods.
  • Ability to process geographical data and integrate it into further analyses, e.g. with geoinformation systems.
  • Experience in the development, modelling, simulation and optimisation of functional and technical or social systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and good command of English.
  • Strong willingness to communicate and cooperate and ability to work in a team.
  • Experience in the realisation of third-party funded projects desirable.

We offer
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally.
