Job Summary

The Design Manager is responsible for a subset of design decisions related to a portfolio of data center projects, which can include new construction, phased expansion, retrofits and upgrades, acquisition conversions, mechanical and electrical equipment selections, and standards upgrades, either regionally or globally. They are high-performing mechanical, electrical, or controls engineers or architects with demonstrated capability to think and make decisions across disciplines. The Design Senior Staff critically assesses design decisions under the guidance of more senior staff and supports applying Equinix standards and country-specific regulations to optimize design choices. They manage relationships and output of key design partners and equipment suppliers, critically assessing and escalating issues where partnerships do not meet expectations.

Responsibilities

Design Process

  • Owns a subset of the design process, collaborating with architectural, mechanical, electrical, and other design partners to deliver world-class data centers emphasizing technical excellence, resilience, and cost management.
  • Contributes to developing standardized tools, techniques, and processes for design management and reporting.
  • Ensures consistency and technical excellence across regions by collaborating with peers and applying global standards.

Regional Role:

  • Supports site-specific conditions, utility infrastructure design, costs, utility availability, planning authorities, and logistics during construction.
  • Provides locally informed infrastructure design and collaborates with master planning teams.

Center of Excellence Role:

  • Supports master planning of expansion portfolios using global standards, incorporating regional data.
  • Creates project visualizations, initial models, and cost estimates for business case development.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Maintains relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including design consultants, construction teams, and regional P&L owners.
  • Collaborates with the center of excellence and senior design staff to ensure comprehensive design consideration and approval.

Project Management

  • Manages design schedules, ensuring timely creation and review of design documentation and approvals.
  • Coordinates with construction teams during project execution to ensure proper documentation and closure.

Design Oversight

  • Stays updated on technological advancements, ensuring designs support future needs.
  • Reviews designs for compliance with standards and business requirements, escalating issues as needed.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a design firm or mission-critical building environment; architectural leadership in mission-critical design is preferred.
  • MS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Architecture preferred; BSc acceptable with extensive experience. Architects should hold RA or AIA credentials.
  • PE license desirable but not essential.
