Coordinator WASH Systems Strengthening

in Germany, Zimbabwe, or Sierra Leone

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of two years, depending on funding approval. Funding is very likely, with good prospects for extension beyond two years. Employment locations include Germany (Bonn or Berlin), Zimbabwe (Harare), or Sierra Leone (Freetown).

As Coordinator WASH Systems Strengthening, you will provide strategic leadership to the Global WASH program, a flagship initiative at Welthungerhilfe (WHH) focusing on WASH systems strengthening in fragile and developing contexts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal #6. The program, implemented in India, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe, aims to enhance the long-term basis for service delivery at micro- and meso-levels, leveraging lessons and evidence to influence systems at national and global levels. Specifically, the program seeks to:

  • Facilitate the delivery of WASH services to users by promoting pilot models and advocating for infrastructure investments for inclusive services (micro level)
  • Strengthen local government or service authorities in their functions (meso level)
  • Influence regional, national, and international actors to improve the enabling environment for service delivery (macro level)

Your responsibilities

  • Set up and coordinate phase II of the WASH systems program, including inception, intervention design, and implementation.
  • Oversee and coordinate activities at country levels, including managing partner and consultant contracts in collaboration with respective WHH country offices and project leaders.
  • Provide technical oversight to field teams and mentor senior staff in designing program activities.
  • Review and advise on work plans throughout the project duration.
  • Ensure effective and transparent use of financial resources, timely reporting, and compliance with donor regulations and WHH policies.
  • Maintain quality control through a monitoring system in cooperation with the MEAL team at HQ and in-country.
  • Manage learning, facilitate external support, and collaborate with the program's learning module head.
  • Represent WHH in high-level meetings and forums (e.g., RWSN, SWA, Agenda for Change).
  • Maintain a network of subject matter experts and advise management on challenges, risks, and opportunities.
  • Conduct appraisals, manage contracts, and provide development and training opportunities for country teams and partners.
  • Participate in or facilitate internal exchange workshops and annual events.

Your profile

  • A university or college degree in a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in project/program management, coordinating implementation teams across multiple countries in diverse, fragile, or developing contexts.
  • Proven experience in financial management of large programs.
  • Strong professional networking skills and experience in synthesizing stakeholder interests (government, non-state actors, private sector).
  • Experience in advocacy work in the Global South.
  • Experience in designing and facilitating training and mutual learning activities.
  • Experience with BMZ as a donor is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel to Asia and Africa.
  • Willingness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in program countries.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills.
