Description

AWS is launching the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), a major development in Utility Computing (UC). We seek experienced systems development engineers with a strong background in cloud operations to lead this initiative. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will build and lead teams dedicated to high-availability AWS services such as EC2, S3, DynamoDB, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. About ESC and AWS UC

European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) is part of AWS Utility Computing (UC), which offers innovative products from foundational services like S3 and EC2 to new industry-leading solutions. As a UC team member, you’ll support the development and management of compute, database, storage, IoT, platform, and productivity services, including security-focused solutions for specialized customer needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the launch of ESC in 2025, collaborating with global AWS teams.
  • Influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
  • Work with technology leaders to enhance operations, availability, reliability, latency, and performance of ESC.
  • Deliver scalable, high-availability services for EU customers.

A typical day includes:

  • Operating production systems (~50%) and improving their reliability (~50%).
  • Root cause analysis of deployment failures and fixing bugs.
  • Executing sensitive, time-critical changes in production.
  • Participating in design discussions, coding, and providing feedback.

Occasional on-call rotations to resolve incidents outside working hours are required.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Legal right to work in Germany.
  • Relocation support available within the EU.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, Typescript, Python, Ruby).
  • Familiarity with Linux, command line, basic system administration, and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with scripting and automation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience troubleshooting at all levels (network, OS, applications).
  • Scripting skills in Bash, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., CloudFormation, CDK, Puppet, Chef, Ansible).
