Focused Energy is a fusion energy startup with the goal of generating unlimited clean energy to responsibly meet future global demand. The founders include two highly renowned scientists and a long-time entrepreneur and founder of several successful startups. With the use and commercialization of laser-induced inertial fusion, a clean and highly efficient power generation technology is coming within reach, suitable to ensure a secure and scalable future energy supply.

Our approach not only paves the way for renewable energy generation but also enables the creation of versatile and bright laser-driven radiation sources (LDRS). This novel and compact technology offers broad application fields and promises to transform conventional methods of non-destructive testing. With our laser-driven radiation sources, we tackle unresolved societal and technical challenges, such as making nuclear waste suitable for long-term storage, enabling our energy infrastructure to be ready for the transition to renewable energy, and helping to prevent illegal smuggling across our borders. Our spin-off technology not only allows cost reduction in fusion technology but also the advancement of the necessary components. This accelerates the deployment of fusion reactors while simultaneously contributing to solving other pressing issues of our time.

We are seeking a skilled Image Recognition Expert / AI Engineer to join our team and help us shape the future of energy.

What you’ll do:

  1. Develop and implement AI-based image recognition algorithms to identify and classify materials within radiography and tomography images.

  2. Analyze and mitigate image artifacts caused by noise, misalignment, or equipment limitations during radiographic imaging.

  3. Optimize data preprocessing and image reconstruction workflows for higher accuracy and precision.

  4. Research and apply advanced techniques for reducing artifacts and improving image quality in 3D tomography.

  5. Collaborate with hardware and software teams to improve imaging system performance.

  6. Integrate AI models into existing imaging pipelines for automated material characterization.

  7. Validate and benchmark the AI models against experimental datasets to ensure accuracy and reliability.

  8. Document development processes, findings, and improvements to guide future work.

  9. Integrate hardware interfaces to extract real-time data.

  10. Analyze camera data and support the integration of feedback loops.

  11. Implement software and hardware infrastructure to run and train neural networks.

  12. Be responsible for your own project.

  13. Work together with simulation, engineering, and experimental teams to create the necessary data.

  14. Report progress to upper management.

  15. Work collaboratively to build the world’s first LDRS system ready for applications.

  16. Coordinate with other teams to integrate your results into a larger system.

Who you are:

  1. Degree in Computer Science, Medical Informatics (e.g., Medical Imaging processing & AI), or Machine Learning & Imaging Data Engineering.

  2. 5+ years in AI-based image analysis, preferably in radiography or tomography imaging systems, including X-ray, CT, or neutron imaging technologies.

  3. Strong proficiency in neural networks (e.g., CNNs, transformers), machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and image processing libraries (e.g., OpenCV, scikit-image).

  4. Expertise in addressing imaging challenges such as noise, misalignment, and distortions.

  5. Knowledge of iterative reconstruction, denoising, and signal correction algorithms.

  6. Hands-on experience with 3D image reconstruction, volumetric datasets, and tools like ITK/VTK.

  7. Strong skills in Python or C++.

  8. Ability to preprocess and analyze large datasets, preparing them for ML training.

  9. Train ML Models on relevant data in the right format.

  10. Evaluate the accuracy of AI-based solutions against experimental data.

  11. Experience working in multidisciplinary teams across hardware, software, and physics domains.

  12. Clear and effective communication and documentation of technical findings.

  13. Good understanding of physics and natural sciences.

  14. Passion for innovative technologies and sustainable solutions.

  15. Fluent in German and/or English.
