Junior Professorship (W1) in Marine Evolutionary Genomics

Kiel University and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel aim to attract qualified women for professorships.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University has a joint appointment with GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel to fill the following position:

Junior Professorship (W1) in Marine Evolutionary Genomics

This is a temporary civil servant position initially for 3 years, with the possibility of extension for another 3 years upon successful evaluation. The role is based at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (www.geomar.de) within the "Marine Evolutionary Ecology" research unit in the "Marine Ecology" division, led by Prof. Thorsten Reusch.

We seek applications from early career researchers with a strong doctoral background in genetics of aquatic organisms, evolutionary biology, genomics, or related fields. Candidates should have in-depth knowledge of evolutionary genomics and bioinformatics, and a track record of developing independent research, demonstrated through excellent publications. The research should focus on innovative marine evolutionary biology and genomics involving multicellular animals or plants, either as a new area for GEOMAR or to strengthen existing topics such as (epi)genomic adaptation, host-pathogen evolution, clonal evolution, fisheries-induced evolution, or assisted evolution for habitat restoration.

The successful candidate should possess expertise in population genetics, ecological genomics, and bioinformatics scripting, which will support teaching commitments mainly within the Master’s program in Biological Oceanography at GEOMAR. Teaching obligations are approximately 4 semester hours, aligned with state regulations (LVVO) of Schleswig-Holstein.

Preferred qualifications include a successful record in third-party funding, experience in teaching genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology, or marine biology, and supervision of students. Collaboration with Kiel University research initiatives like Kiel Marine Science (KMS), Kiel Life Science (KLS), and Kiel Evolution Center (KEC) is encouraged.

GEOMAR offers shared technical staff, support in marine cultivation and bioinformatics, and access to facilities like KIMOCC for experimental work. High-performance computing and sequencing resources at Kiel University are available.

Applicants should meet employment requirements under § 64 of the Higher Education Act of Schleswig-Holstein. Further info is available at www.berufungen.uni-kiel.de. Inquiries can be directed to Prof. Thorsten Reusch at treusch@geomar.de.

We prioritize increasing female representation and encourage qualified women to apply, with women given priority in case of equal qualifications. We also support employment of disabled individuals and welcome applications from candidates with migration backgrounds. Please refrain from submitting photographs.

Applications in English, including CV, academic certificates, publication and funding lists, and research/teaching statements (max 2 pages each), should be sent as a single PDF to the Dean, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Kiel University, by 6 June 2025. Send applications to bewerbung(at)mnf.uni-kiel.de.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel has received the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for its efforts in promoting equal opportunity.
