The job

Biodiversity loss is an emerging risk for business and finance. This position aims to translate ecological modeling data on birds from ongoing research into practical applications for companies and financial institutions. These applications will assess how company-driven land-use changes and broader restoration efforts impact biodiversity—helping users measure their footprint, evaluate risks, and identify opportunities to support decision-making. The project fosters strong links between science and practice to ensure that research outputs address the real-world needs of business, finance, and policy. A PostDoc is sought to help drive this transformation by engaging with stakeholders, identifying user needs, and co-developing applications aligned with EU policies such as the Nature Restoration Law and CSRD.

  • Assess the evolving policy landscape and identify opportunities for integrating biodiversity into corporate decision making, sustainable finance instruments and transition plans
  • Conduct a market overview of existing biodiversity assessment applications relevant to business and finance
  • Identify and engage with potential collaborators from academia, industry and the financial sector and support the exchange between science and practice
  • Work closely with scientists to integrate biodiversity data and ecological projections into practical applications for companies and financial institutions
  • Translate stakeholder needs into scientific requirements and coordinate the co-development of user-oriented tools
  • Ensure alignment of applications with relevant EU policy frameworks, such as the Nature Restoration Law, CSRD, SFDR and related frameworks such as TNFD and ISSB

We offer

  • The freedom to master even the most demanding challenges between basic research and practical application
  • The chance to work in interdisciplinary, international teams and benefit from a variety of perspectives
  • Firstclass integration into national and international research networks to work together on global challenges
  • Excellent research infrastructure and research data management to optimally support your work
  • Flexible working hours and a wide range of options for balancing work and care responsibilities through our family office
  • Competent support and advice for international colleagues arriving at the UFZ from the 'International Office'
  • Special annual payment, capital-forming benefits and subsidised Germany Job Ticket
  • A workplace in a vibrant region with a high life quality and social and cultural diversity

Your profile

  • PhD in Ecology, Global Change Biology, Biodiversity Economics, or a related field
  • Strong background in applied research and the ability to translate scientific results into practical applications
  • Experience in collaboration with companies and stakeholders from the private sector
  • Strong understanding of biodiversity indicators and their application in assessment frameworks
  • Familiarity with science-policy interfaces and related national and international sustainability processes (e.g. UNFCCC, CBD, IPBES)
  • Good knowledge of EU sustainability reporting frameworks, especially CSRD, and related policy developments and applications such as transition plans
  • Good knowledge of economic and policy instruments relevant for integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services into decision making of corporates and financial institutions
  • Well networked in relevant science-policy-business networks in Germany and the EU
  • Strong communication skills and motivation to work in an interdisciplinary, stakeholder-focused environment
  • International publication record
  • Excellent language skills in English and German
