Project manager (f_m_x) ERC Synergy project GERACLE

GFZ is Germany's national centre for solid Earth research. We advance the understanding of dynamic processes to address global challenges, from mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and sustaining our habitat amid global change to responsibly managing georesources. We are part of the Helmholtz Association, the largest German scientific organisation. With around 1,200 employees as well as ca. 500 guest researchers, we contribute to the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment, aligning cutting-edge research with societal relevance and international collaboration. Our work integrates multidisciplinary studies across Earth's system components, leveraging advanced technologies and infrastructure to research solutions and to transfer our knowledge to society. We are doing this according to our vision: "Taking the pulse of our Earth to safeguard a habitable planet".

For section 2.3 Geomagnetism (department 2 "Geophysics"), we are looking for a:

Project manager (f_m_x) ERC Synergy project GERACLE

Reference Number 10452

The position is part of the international ERC Synergy project GERACLE to investigate the atmospheric and climatic effects of geomagnetic field reversals and excursions. Responsibilities will include all aspects of managing and coordinating this project with partners at the University of Helsinki, the University of Oulu and the BOKU University in Vienna.

Your responsibilities:

  • Management of the international ERC Synergy project GERACLE in collaboration with project partners from Finland and Austria
  • Organising virtual and in-person project meetings, workshops and seminars
  • Monitoring of budgets and progress
  • Preparing reports
  • Correspondence with the ERC office
  • Public outreach regarding project results (e.g. news items, project website, and social media activities)


Your qualifications:
  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) and a PhD in natural sciences, preferentially in Physics, Geophysics or a related field
  • Experience in international scientific collaboration
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Experience in project management is an advantage
  • Experience with public outreach is an advantage

Start date: 1st September 2025
Fixed-term: Initially for 3 years (with the option of extension for a further three years)
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to "TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)". The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Part-time 50% (currently 19.50 h/week)
Place of work: Potsdam
