We're looking for a seasoned frontend engineer to pioneer our enterprise-wide design system as the team's first full-time member. In this highly impactful role, you'll lay the foundation for a scalable, resilient, and forward-looking UI component library built on React. You'll take ownership of the design system's architecture, maintenance, and strategic direction, shaping both its technical and cultural evolution.

Your work will bridge the gap between design and development: you'll collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams within and beyond our organization to foster an open, inclusive, and collaborative design culture. The Software Factory is secunet's innovation program, designed to provide the technical means to develop entirely new product classes. It consists of a team of highly motivated software engineers focused on cutting-edge, security-focused shared components, and a DevSecOps platform that supports the entire lifecycle of our products. Responsibilities include:

• Build and maintain the core infrastructure of our design system
• Develop a sustainable architecture for React-based UI components (HTML, CSS, JS/TS)
• Collaborate with design teams to identify needs early and deliver consistent solutions
• Foster a collaborative, open source-inspired culture around the design system
• Contribute to the long-term strategy and support the launch of new initiatives
• Research emerging UI trends to keep the framework future-ready
• Align priorities across teams and moderate between different needs

Minimum qualifications:

• Extensive experience in frontend development
• Experience with UI components and design systems
• Passion for clean, reusable, and well-documented UI components
• Background in maintainership and open-source collaboration
• Excellent communication skills to align needs and co-create solutions
• Strategic mindset and interest in sustainable technology design
• Comfortable working across disciplines—from design to development to product
• Familiarity with the German language is an advantage but not strictly required

Bonus Points

• Experience with designing tokens and maintaining component libraries
• Familiarity with Figma and close collaboration with designers
• Knowledge of Nix build system; willingness to learn is expected
