Huawei’s Nuremberg Research Center is responsible for Network Energy Advanced Technology Research, Architecture Evolution Design and Strategic Technology Planning.

The Power Conversion Technology Laboratory within Huawei’s Nuremberg Research Center is responsible for Advanced Digital Power Technology Research, Architecture Evolution Design and Strategic Technology Planning, and plays an important role in the Huawei Digital Power business in the design and development of power converters and control systems for applications such as PV Solar & Battery Energy Storage Field, Data Centers, Electric Vehicle, and Embedded Power Supply.

Principle/Senior Engineer in Battery System Engineering (m/f/d)

Your mission

  • Provide insights of core technologies for next-generation battery energy storage system designs including novel cooling strategies and advanced power electronics integration as well as energy management system interfaces.
  • Provide insights in advanced battery management systems with novel monitoring as well as state estimation methods and support elaboration of corresponding specifications.
  • Provide insights of application specific requirements of stationary battery energy storage systems, especially in European markets: residential, district/micro-grids, C&I, utility-scale (stand-alone and co-located).
  • Provide insights on hybrid energy storage systems and potential markets developments aligned with requirements for successful energy transition.
  • Model and simulate battery energy storage systems consisting of battery packs, power electronics, cooling, safety concept as well as battery and energy management with consideration of electrical and thermal behavior as well as consideration of aging mechanisms.
  • Model and simulate hybrid energy storage systems consisting of batteries and technologies for high power applications as well as for long-duration storage requirements.
  • Consider trade-offs between accuracy and computational complexity for battery models used for simulation of entire BESS, in depth system analyses (e.g., most important stress factors of the different applications, and their impact on lifetime) as well as for developing advanced battery management and energy management algorithms.
  • Make use of system simulation for detailed investigation of performance of battery packs and the entire BESS under varying operating conditions as well as under varying battery states (e.g., pack-to-pack variations and intrinsic cell-to-cell variations).
  • Make use of system simulation for detailed investigation of fault scenarios and their impacts on the entire BESS, such as increased inner resistance or even internal short circuit.
  • Identify the impact of load profiles in various behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter applications on BESS lifetime.
  • Support the development of high-quality cooperations in Europe and help Huawei maintain long-term and sustainable relationships with universities and research institutions.
  • Responsible for closely collaborating with Huawei Digital Power Headquarter R&D and product teams.

Your areas of expertise

  • PhD in electrical engineering, control science and engineering, electrochemistry, physics or in any related field.
  • Profound work experience in battery energy storage domains with a clear understanding of stationary applications and its requirements and technology challenges.
  • High-level scientific papers in the fields of battery models, battery application studies or battery / energy management systems.
  • Experience in leading project teams with corresponding management skills.
  • Have a good relationship with the top research groups in Europe.
  • Willing to travel internationally (European countries and China).
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and German. Chinese and other European language skills are a plus.
  • Very good communication skills and multi-cultural environment adaptability.
