In this position, you will execute research and development projects to address modern power grid issues with growing DERs, EVs, and smart loads. The Lead Engineer Energy Systems will report to the Regional Team Lead at Eaton Research Labs in Aachen/Bonn and help identify key technical gaps, influencing the technology roadmap for Eaton's power systems products and services. This work aims to help Eaton's businesses solve critical problems and uncover new opportunities.

Primary functions:

  • Develop, implement, and demonstrate solutions for energy system applications including DER management, DC Distribution, EVCI, advanced grid management, grid connectivity, and digitalization. This includes digital twins, advanced control, optimization, and protection algorithms, as well as real-time simulation frameworks.

Develop, implement, and validate flexibility, ancillary services, and optimization algorithms for power system operation and planning.

Serve as a technical or project lead in technology development and demonstration projects.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Stay current with research trends and technologies, applying knowledge to government-funded projects.
  • Innovate and challenge state-of-the-art designs and processes, securing intellectual property through patents and publications.

Qualifications:

  • PhD + 3+ years or Master’s + 5+ years of experience in developing high-quality technology solutions.
  • Strong experience in areas such as DER/EV management, EV infrastructure, energy management systems, grid automation, microgrids, and control.
  • Expertise in integrating generation and storage technologies into demonstration sites.
  • Experience with advanced data analytics, control/reinforcement learning, and power system simulation software like MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD.
  • Experience with real-time simulations, hardware-in-the-loop, and power hardware-in-the-loop (Opal-RT, RTDS, Typhoon HIL).
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance algorithms and AI applications for energy management.
  • Hands-on experience with field or lab testing of power electronics and energy systems.
  • Proficiency in English required; German is highly desirable.

Skills evaluated:

  • Programming in Python and C++.
  • Experience with communication protocols like CAN, Ethernet, TCP/IP, MQTT.
  • Team-oriented, collaborative approach in a flat hierarchy environment.
