The Chief Software Architect for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is responsible for leading a team of senior software architects through the full lifecycle development of advanced software solutions and medical devices across our Clinical Chemistry, Immunoassay, Hematology, Urinalysis, Clinical Informatics and Automation product lines. This role will drive the design, development, and deployment of scalable and high-performance software architectures, with a focus on platform strategy, interoperability, security, and maintainability.

This position is part of the Global Technology Organization and will be on-site at our Baierbrunn (Munich), Germany facilities. At Beckman Coulter, our vision is to relentlessly reimagine healthcare, one diagnosis at a time.

You will report to the Vice President, Digital Platform, and work in partnership with Product Management, Project Management Office, Systems Engineering, and R&D to ensure our software solutions and medical device products meet the needs of a rapidly evolving diagnostics landscape. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the definition, evolution, and execution of multigenerational software architecture roadmaps aligned with strategic product goals and innovation plans.
  • Define, implement, and maintain the overarching architecture for software platform, products and solution, ensuring modularity, reusability, scalability, performance, and security.
  • Drive the design of a new digital platform and services, including cloud-native and edge solutions, while ensuring compliance with medical and cybersecurity standards.
  • Apply software development methodologies appropriate for regulated medical software, including Agile, V-model, and iterative development models, while ensuring traceability and verification across the development lifecycle.
  • Incorporate IEC 62304-compliant processes, including software risk classification, design control, and rigorous software lifecycle documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements and clinical needs into robust software solutions.
  • Oversee technical risk management activities, technical debt reduction, and architectural reviews to ensure high-quality code and system stability.
  • Spearhead adoption of state-of-the-art software development tools, DevOps pipelines, CI/CD practices, and architectural governance.
  • Support IP strategy and innovation by contributing to patent filings and monitoring emerging technology trends and competitive threats.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing team of global software architects, fostering a culture of innovation, quality, and continuous learning.
  • Harmonize software architecture practices across teams, ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide technology strategies and regulatory frameworks.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Proven experience leading architecture for complex software products, particularly in regulated environments such as medical devices, diagnostics, or life sciences.
  • Strong knowledge of software design patterns, microservices architecture, APIs, data architecture, and cybersecurity principles.
  • Deep understanding of risk-based software development and regulatory compliance, including IEC 62304, ISO 14971, and software verification/validation best practices.
  • Experience with AI/ML-enabled systems, interoperability standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR), or digital twin architectures in healthcare.
  • Demonstrated success in developing cloud, edge, hybrid software solutions or medical device products that are reliable, secure, and scalable.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills with a global and cross-functional mindset.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related field with 15+ years of experience in software product development, or master’s degree in engineering and experience in technical leadership roles.
  • Experience building and scaling engineering teams, developing talent, and driving organizational excellence in software development.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully applying technologies to develop creative and efficient solutions.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and FDA/CE regulations related to software as a medical device (SaMD).
  • Experience with Agile frameworks adapted for regulated environments (e.g., Agile with Design Controls), or hybrid Agile/Waterfall implementations for safety-critical software.
