Research Engineer – Software Development or DevOps (m/f/div), 80 – 100 %

Join the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems as a Research Engineer in software development or DevOps. In this role you will support researchers and engineers in turning research into high‑impact software.

Responsibilities

  • Implementation of software solutions for research purposes
  • Translation of research code into robust software (optimisation, refactoring)
  • Contribution to research projects to enable deployment (containerisation, virtualization)
  • Management and diversification of our in‑house software infrastructure (CI/CD)
  • Dissemination of good software practices (reviews, tutorials, workshops)
  • Maintenance of software libraries and infrastructure

Qualifications

  • MSc/PhD in computer science, electrical engineering or related discipline
  • Several years of experience in software and DevOps engineering
  • Team‑player attitude
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • At least two of the following: expertise in C++ and/or Rust and Python; experience in code optimisation and scientific libraries; experience in Agile development; experience with DevOps frameworks (Docker, Ansible, GitLab CI/CD)

What we offer

The position is located in Tübingen with some remote flexibility. Salaries and contract are based on experience according to TVöD guidelines. It is a full‑time contract, initially limited to two years with the possibility of transition to permanent.
