About Us

At Lanes & Planes, we are a lean, minimalistic, and fun team of developers who value good communication, responsibility, learning, pragmatism, teamwork, and developer happiness. We’re not fans of bureaucracy, buzzwords, or unnecessary meetings. Instead, we prioritize collaboration, mutual respect, and a commitment to producing high-quality code. If this resonates with you, we’re excited to welcome you as our Team Lead for Ruby on Rails Development!

Your Position

As the Team Lead, you will guide and inspire a team of 10 - 15 talented Ruby on Rails developers. Your mission is to foster a collaborative, growth-oriented environment where team members can thrive while ensuring our code quality and projects exceed expectations. You will lead by example, contribute to the codebase, and champion best practices in development and team management.

Your every day work routine

  • Leadership & Mentorship: You can juggle and prioritize multiple projects. You are a good judge of when and how to say “no” to requests. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to your team, fostering an environment of trust, learning, and collaboration.
  • Hands-On Development: Lead by example through active participation in coding, testing, and reviewing our codebase.
  • Code Quality Assurance: Maintain and elevate code quality standards within the team. Conduct code reviews and ensure robust testing processes are followed.
  • Shape Up: We utilize the Shape Up methodology by 37signals, focusing on time-boxed project cycles, clear problem definitions, and empowered teams to deliver meaningful work efficiently.
  • Shaping phase: You are pragmatic and think outside the box. You recognize the value in building something quick/simple that gets 80% of the job done vs something complex and time-consuming to get 99% of the job done. You participate in the pre-betting phase, assisting the Product Operations Manager in ensuring the project is achievable within the given timeframe, removing unnecessary elements and following the principles of KISS and YAGNI.
  • Problem Solving: You don’t stop at patching bugs. You also ask “How can we avoid this in the future?”. Take ownership of issues, investigate root causes, and implement sustainable fixes to maintain system reliability.
  • Team Culture: Advocate for a fun and fulfilling workplace. Proactively address challenges to maintain developer happiness and productivity. Recognize and cater to the strengths of specific developers and pave the way for them to perform at their best.
  • Encouraging Open Ideas: You facilitate good ideas from everyone without squashing opinions of anyone. You can articulate your reasoning.
  • Work Flexibility: “Flexible working hours.” Our furthest devs are 8 hours apart (7h from Central European time). You may get questions at odd hours of the day.
  • Clear & Inclusive Communication: You are an excellent communicator in both speaking and written form. You can conduct a conversation involving both technical and non-technical personnel and still keep everyone on the same page.
  • Maintaining Project Momentum: You recognize and fix bottlenecks. You keep things constantly moving. You are responsive.

Your profile

  • Technical Expertise:
    • 6+ years of experience as a Senior Ruby on Rails Developer.
    • Proven experience in Full Stack Development and diverse project environments, preferably in startups.
    • Ideally experience in a B2B SaaS company.
  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, preferably with prior experience managing developers.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Passion for Quality: A commitment to high standards, including clean code, thorough testing, and continuous improvement.
  • Location Flexibility: Willing to relocate to Germany or work remotely within GMT-0 to GMT+3.

What you can expect

  • You will be equipped with the latest MacBook of your liking.
  • You will not be kept with time-consuming meetings; we prefer the async way via Slack.
  • You work with an international team with whom you can regularly exchange ideas in our Munich office or remotely.
  • Flat hierarchies and quick decisions.
  • Creative freedom and active participation in building our company.
  • Exciting team events.
