Lead Safety and Reliability Engineer (D/F/M)

This position is part of our Safety Business Unit, which aims to enable safer, greener and more inclusive industries and transportation systems.
Task Description
- Developing and defining new concepts and methodologies for complex, RAMS and Safety critical systems on spacecraft, substem or equipment level
- Overall technical and expert authority for all RAMS and Safety topics within a complex program or product portfolio, providing definitive expert judgement for critical design/operational decisions
- Performing complex safety assessments at different product maturity stages (safety phases I, II and III)
- Analyzing and solving highly complex, RAMS problems including extensive analysis of system interfaces and performance
- Directing and coordinating external/internal RAMS teams and acting as the primary, final technical negotiator with major customers and governmental/international space agencies
- Developing and leading the implementation of risk optimization and safety‑by‑design strategies that influence core system architecture
- Strategic guidance for junior/senior engineers and defining the technical training roadmap for the department
- Performing and coordinating safety assessments for operations, remove & repair activities
- Establishing and leading reliability, availability and maintainability analyses for multi‑disciplinary systems
- Leading the preparation of FMECA, HSIA, fault tree analyses; defining, coordinating, and managing technical interfaces with multiple major equipment suppliers
- Defining RAMS requirements in contribution to specifications at equipment level and following the relevant design development to check the compliance to the defined requirements
- Coordinating and conduction the preparation of hazard analyses for spacecraft, equipment/instruments as well as for ground support equipment
- Co‑engineering with FDIR architects (failure detection, isolation and recovery) and optimising the FDIR architecture
- Preparation of required documentation and technical reports for internal and external presentation of work results
Required Qualifications
It requires knowledge and skills typically acquired through a relevant degree (up to 4 years) in aeronautical or mechanical engineering, or through equivalent vocational training with extensive subject‑specific qualifications. The overall knowledge and experience required may also be acquired in other ways.
Skills and Competences
- Extensive and specialised knowledge in the areas of responsibility
- In‑depth knowledge of unmanned space systems, particularly payload systems
- Extensive, applied knowledge of Safety and Reliability Engineering in the aeronautical or space sector
- Advanced knowledge of complex hazard analysis and fault tree analysis
- Comprehensive knowledge of safety processes, regulations and guidelines (ECSS‑Q‑ST‑40C, ARP 4761, ARP 4754A) mandatory
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills for multi‑system disturbances
- Excellent communication and coordination skills, strong sense of responsibility
- High level of commitment, flexibility and a strong service mentality
- Very good written and spoken English and German
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally occasionally
