System Administrator (SysAd) – Ispra (On Site) – European Commission

Job role: System Administrator (SysAd).

Studies required: Bachelor’s level or 3 years of higher education.

Language: English (C1). (MANDATORY)

Location: Ispra (Onsite).

Description

This role requires a network administrator who will support security-related implementations within the network operations team.

Beyond the responsibilities outlined in the Service Requirements document for the framework contract, the selected candidate must be able to manage day-to-day operational tasks for the relevant services and actively participate in the delivery of new projects.

Core duties involve providing network administration support within the network operations team, with expertise in switching, routing, Wi‑Fi, and network security, among other areas.

Knowledge and skills

Knowledge requirements

Expert in

  • Switching technologies (particularly Cisco), layer 2 network design. CCNA (CCNP as a plus) level certification from Cisco or any other networking vendor demonstrating knowledge on the switching area of networking.
  • Routing technologies, dynamic routing protocols, layer 3 network design.
  • Wi‑Fi technologies (particularly for Cisco products).
  • Network protocol services (NTP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP…).
  • Cisco ACI networking technology (hardware knowledge also a plus).
  • VMware NSX platform.
  • Network quality of service techniques and technologies.
  • Network security techniques and technologies.

Administrator/Operator level

  • System administration of Linux servers (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS and others).
  • Network access control systems (NAC).
  • Operating and monitoring of infrastructure, systems and servers (PRTG preferred).
  • IDS/IPS network intrusion detection technologies.
  • Firewalling technologies (particularly Cisco and Fortinet systems).
  • VPN standards and technologies.
  • Network logging systems (Syslog and SIEM log correlation applications).

Other cross‑cutting competencies

  • LAN technologies, TCP/IP protocol.
  • Netbox.
  • Experience creating technical documentation.
  • Good communication skills in English.
  • Administration of server virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware).

Non‑technical skills

  • Capability of integration in an international/multicultural environment, rapid self‑starting capability and experience in working in a team.
  • Ability to participate in multilingual meetings.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment, on multiple large projects.
  • Excellent team player.
  • Ability to understand, speak and write English. Italian will be an advantage.
  • High degree of discretion and integrity is required as the applications managed and maintained in JRC.T.6 contain personal and confidential data.

Specific expertise

  • Cisco ACI management.

Certifications & standards

  • CCNA is required for the performance of tasks.
