The Smart Eyewear Lab

The Smart Eyewear Lab, a pioneering project in the heart of Milan, is the first joint research centre between EssilorLuxottica and Politecnico di Milano, aimed at designing the smart-glasses of the future and a new generation of wearables capable of autonomous network connection. It will enable the development of new technologies and services using eyewear as the interface.

The Lab will work as part of the EssilorLuxottica Group’s R&D platform and will initially last five years, employing over 100 researchers and scientists in a dedicated space within the Innovation District in Milan.

Your Role

By joining EssilorLuxottica and the EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab you’ll have the opportunity to live first-hand an immersive experience in technology, innovation and the future. You’ll work in a passion-driven and diverse environment made up of international stakeholders.

We are looking for a highly motivated physicist/optical engineer for the development of innovative augmented reality solutions to be applied on future smart glasses. You will work closely with research teams from Politecnico di Milano and EssilorLuxottica in an international context to develop innovative solutions for embedding AR on spectacles. You will be included in the optical integration research stream of the Smart Eyewear Lab.

Main Responsibilities

• State of the art analysis. Identify relevant previous studies, select the most relevant approaches, compare them and implement the proposed solutions.
• Nano-optics fabrication. Define fabrication protocols for nano-optics materials in clean room.
• Testing protocols and data analysis. Test and validate nano-optics devices through defined protocols and analyze data.
• Supervising. Supervise junior staff members and PhD students.
• Optical integration and industrialization. Integrate nano-optics materials into eyewear and define industrialization methods.

Main Requirements

The ideal candidate is a physicist/material scientist with R&D skills, interested in smart eyewear devices, capable of developing innovative solutions independently while collaborating with a diverse team, contributing to complex and highly innovative solutions. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to design and prototype nano-optical devices for AR applications and have solid experience in clean room facility management. Knowledge of photonics, nano-photonics and programming are essential.

• PhD in Physics, Material Science, Physical Engineering, Photonics
• At least 5 years of experience in an R&D position or process engineering in relevant industry after PhD
• Experience in literature analysis and scouting of innovative approaches
• Proficiency in data exploration and results presentation
• Solid experience in nanophotonics material fabrication, prototyping and testing
• Solid experience in management of clean room equipment for nanofabrication (PECVD, sputtering, RIE, EBL, NIL, etc)
• Experience in Matlab, Python or C++
• Basic knowledge of optical simulation software such as Ansys Zemax, Ansys Lumerical, Comsol Multiphysics
• Basic knowledge of electronic systems and sensors, embedded system and firmware development
• Fluent English
