Position Summary

This position requires a high level of technical knowledge applied to department testing, clinical relevance, and complex problem-solving. The role includes ensuring compliance with laboratory accreditation and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA ’88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA). Responsibilities may include collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens.

Core Functions

• Perform accurate and timely testing according to policies, including startup, calibration, and maintenance of equipment. Participate in problem-solving and quality assurance activities. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of computer systems and testing theories. Assist in compliance and assume lead responsibilities when needed.
• Monitor and validate patient and QC results, participate in process improvements, and contribute to department and system projects. Train and evaluate staff, and provide educational support to internal and external customers.
• Process and prepare patient samples, ensuring proper identification and specimen integrity.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None directly; may oversee Medical Lab Technicians, Clinical Lab Assistants, Phlebotomists indirectly.

Scope and Complexity

Work involves interdepartmental communication with internal staff and external clients, within the department and laboratory system.

Physical Demands

Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 25 pounds, and handling hazardous materials with standard precautions. Must distinguish colors and use standard laboratory equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, or related biological/chemical science with certification (MLS or categorical).
• Foreign candidates must provide credential evaluation; some disciplines may require experience instead of certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• MLS/MT or categorical certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
• Knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
• Experience with phlebotomy and processing.
