Construction Project Manager, EMEA Construction (Substations)

Location: Milan, Italy. Amazon Data Services Italy S.R.L. is seeking a Construction Project Manager to lead HV substation and related infrastructure projects in Italy, with travel across the EMEA region as required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage construction projects and oversee activities related to new substation and transmission line projects in Italy, owning project scope, timeline, and budget.
  • Direct interface with general contractors during bidding, award, execution, and project closeout/punch list phases.
  • Collaborate with general contractors and vendors to deliver efficient, high-quality project turnovers in line with electrical utility requirements.
  • Lead negotiations with general contractors and evaluate bids/proposals with detail and accuracy.
  • Create construction project scope and requests for proposals; review construction submittals.
  • Ensure construction quality control, including creating a commissioning plan and supporting the commissioning process.
  • Lead the group and cross-functional teams supporting the data center working on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Record and report key metrics to team members and senior management; manage capital requests and financial aspects (change orders, purchase orders, invoicing).
  • Drive root-cause analysis and troubleshooting for equipment or electrical failures.
  • Negotiate easements/wayleaves with landowners and utilities as needed.
  • Apply value engineering to reduce costs without impacting quality or reliability.
  • Travel to sites for leadership walk-downs, audits, inspections, start-up testing, and full commissioning; up to 40% travel within the EMEA region.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of recent experience in construction management of large, complex projects involving large-scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants.
  • Understanding of electrical engineering principles including breaker coordination studies and switchgear sequence of operation.
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles for cooling systems.
  • Experience with contractor and vendor management (RFPs, bidding, change orders) on construction and project execution.
  • Experience related to design and construction of HV substations or large-scale mechanical/electrical plants.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large-scale technical operations, mission-critical mechanical/electrical infrastructure, or large-scale compute farms.
  • Experience dealing with location-specific electrical utility providers.
  • Experience with risk and change management through procurement, delivery, and handover of design-and-build projects.
  • Experience leading contract and commercial negotiations and administration of design-and-build projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or 4+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
