We are now looking for a System Simulation Expert to join Systems Reliability team within R&D and Engineering in Power Supply to drive Wärtsilä's transformation toward decarbonization. We seek an intellectually curious engineer with strong mathematical and theoretical expertise, passionate about applying advanced modeling and simulation techniques to tackle complex design and process challenges. This is a permanent position, with preferred locations in Trieste (Italy), Vaasa (Finland), or Turku (Finland). Some travel (approximately 10%) is required, though most meetings are virtual. We also offer flexible hybrid work arrangements.
In this role, you will contribute to R&D projects by defining, managing, and executing modeling and simulation activities. Your responsibilities include developing accurate simulation models of varying complexity, from system-level models with predefined component characteristics to detailed component analyses. You will focus on standalone or coupled simulations for engine components and systems, addressing challenges such as alternative fuel integration and supporting decision-making processes.
Your primary focus will be on system-level 1D-CFD simulations, including tasks such as dimensioning components, analyzing steady-state or transient conditions, and evaluating system responses under equilibrium or specific events (e.g., failure states). You will also integrate 1D-CFD models with other engine models, such as hydraulic, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and control subsystems, to optimize overall system performance.
Additionally, you will maintain and develop internal modeling and simulation guidelines, implement state-of-the-art methodologies, and collaborate with 3D-CFD simulations.
You should hold an MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Candidates with an MSc in Physics, Mathematics, or a BSc with extensive experience will also be considered. A Ph.D. is an advantage. An interest in internal combustion engines is essential. You have an analytical mindset, are systematic, curious, open-minded, and focused. Fluency in English (written and spoken) and proficiency in MS Office are required.
Required knowledge and experience:
We at Wärtsilä believe in empowerment, ownership, and responsibility for our work. We support each other's growth, and co-creation is the basis of our innovation. We dare to see opportunities and take initiative.
We have a fantastic team, and we are excited about our work and its impact on building sustainable societies. We are looking to find a colleague with a shared passion for intelligent technologies and a sustainable future.
We are authentic, honest, and strongly believe in a diverse and inclusive work community where everyone can be their true selves. That is why we have built an environment that empowers you and everyone around you and where you can feel safe and cared for. Are you eager to be part of this ambition?
We hope to hear from you soon, by submitting your application through our career's portal. We aim to keep you updated on the process throughout.
