Progress Rail Signaling Spa is looking for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated Hardware Designer based in Italy, open to our offices in Pistoia.

Founded in 1958, Progress Rail Signaling Spa services railway infrastructure worldwide, producing power supply units, signalling systems with LED technology, Automatic Train Protection Systems and ERTMS solutions. Part of Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company, we offer complete signalling solutions under the ECM brand.

Job Purpose

The Hardware Designer will address the entire hardware development lifecycle—analysis, design, testing and production—to meet the needs of automated traffic control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain digital and analog electrical boards, components and interconnects for ECM Field Equipment Components (FEC).
  • Evaluate new software and hardware during deployment to ensure smooth functioning.
  • Develop and implement product designs, support production, and ensure compliance with time‑frame, quality and cost targets.
  • Manage technical aspects and monitor efficient deployment of new technologies and systems following the SIL4 development process, as prescribed by EN 50126 and 50129.
  • Coordinate with product development teams to perform Design for Testability (DFT) and document changes to create a record of fixes or alterations.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and cross‑functional design teams (hardware, mechanical, software) to reduce bugs and improve end results.
  • Engage with outsourced validation and manufacturing partners and client engineering teams to ensure timely supply of systems and devices per specification.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering or a similar discipline (master’s degree preferred).
  • Hardware engineering software tool knowledge (Altium Designer, Orcad, Cadence Allegro).
  • Programming languages (C, C++). Hardware description languages (Verilog).
  • Operating system software (Linux, UNIX). Electronics tools (oscilloscope, frequency analyzer, testers).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work collaboratively.
  • Good English knowledge (B2).
