Research Specialist, Extension - Integrated Pest Management

Position Title: Research Specialist, Extension - Integrated Pest Management

Division/College: College of Agricultural & Life Sciences

Department: Entomology, Plant Pathology, and Nematology

Location: Parma

The Dimase lab conducts applied research and extension activities focused on integrated pest management (IPM), pesticide safety, and resistance management in specialty crops. The program supports growers statewide through field trials, laboratory bioassays, and educational initiatives that promote responsible pesticide use and regulatory compliance. This position provides technical and outreach support to advance these goals.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare standard solutions for calibration and analyses.
  • Interpret test results and compare with determined standards and limits.
  • Collect laboratory or field data.
  • Conduct research and analyze scientific data.
  • Perform literature reviews.
  • Prepare reports.>
  • Compare data and historical records for trend verification.
  • Develop reference files, comparison charts, and graphs on research data.
  • Assist with site inspections and field oversight.
  • Follow pre-established procedures or protocols.
  • Keep complete and accurate records.
  • Work in a team environment.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Entomology, or Biology.

Required Other

  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to work non-standard business hours as needed.

Preferred Additional

  • Master’s Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Entomology, or Biology.
  • Commitment to following all pesticide safety and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Two years of research/extension experience.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Requires standing, bending, and walking for extended periods during field sampling and plot maintenance.
  • Involves exposure to dust, agricultural chemicals, and live insects (appropriate personal protective equipment provided).
  • Requires working outdoors under variable weather conditions.

Pay Range: $22.00 per hour or higher depending on experience.
