Overview

Join to apply for the Radar System engineer role at Thales

Join to apply for the Radar System engineer role at Thales.

A Joint Venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), Thales Alenia Space is a global space manufacturer delivering, for more than 40 years, high-tech solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth Observation, environmental management, exploration, science and orbital infrastructures. Thanks to our diversity of skills, talents and cultures, our customers (governments, institutions, space agencies, telecommunications operators) therefore have Space to Connect, Secure & Defend, Observe & Protect, Explore, Travel & Navigate.

Responsibilities

  • The Radar Architect engineer covers the definition of RF Payload and Digital Equipment Section.
  • The candidate shall perform:
  • Evaluation of radar input requirements and address toward the radar engineering analyst team, the main performance analyses needed to support the architecture and HW/SW design.
  • Trade-off between possible radar instrument solutions, including the definition of radar instrument architectures and of their main sub-systems (antenna, antenna front-end, RF section, digital section). Focus on the digital section of synthetic aperture radars (SAR), the C&C design definition, Timing, FDIR and related on-board processing (e.g. digital waveform generation and management, echo digital filtering, digital beamforming, data decimation, data compression and formatting).
  • Definition of radar subsystem/units requirements, addressing the HW/SW team with functional decomposition and performance needs for Digital, RF and SW sections.
  • Participation to design reviews toward higher and lower levels as per specific rules and duties.
  • Contribution to requirement traceability and maintenance as per lower level outcomes.
  • Support the Radar System Engineering Manager for RFW/D evaluation coming from subsystem/unit level vs the defined architecture and budget.
  • Contribution to the definition and maintenance of radar payload budgets.
  • Definition and development of software tools (e.g. Matlab tools, Excel worksheets, etc.) for supporting simulations and analyses required for the design and verification of radar payloads hardware.
  • Evaluation of test results and participation in test campaigns: contribute to evaluate radar payload performance by taking part in test campaigns and evaluating tests at instrument, assembly, equipment and unit levels.
  • Participation in meetings with the Radar Instrument design team.
  • Participation in meetings/reviews with internal and external sub-contractors.
  • Participation in meetings/reviews with both internal and external customers.
  • Preparation of documents and handouts.

Qualifications

  • Master degree or PhD in Remote Sensing Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, or Electronics Engineering.
  • Background in HW design for RF and digital electronics, simulations and analysis; skills and experience in Antenna and RF design are considered distinctive elements.
  • Knowledge of Matlab, MS Office products.
  • Knowledge of the English language (at least intermediate level) for both written and verbal communication.
  • Attitude to teamwork.
