Remuneration: Level C position from $155,403 base + 17% Super + Annual Leave Loading pro rata

About The Role

The Lead in Professionalism, Ethics and Law will provide academic leadership in the design, delivery, evaluation and ongoing development of professionalism, ethics and law teaching across the UNSW BMedMD program. The role will oversee existing teaching and assessment within the current program while also working in close partnership with the Medicine Program Redesign team to shape and implement an innovative professionalism, ethics and law curriculum in the redesigned Medicine program.

As an education-focused academic, the appointee will contribute to high-quality teaching and assessment, curriculum innovation, educational scholarship and engagement with relevant internal and external stakeholders. The appointee will work collaboratively with academic, clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that graduates of the UNSW Medicine program are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values required to meet professional standards and community expectations.

The role of Senior Lecturer reports to Program Director, BMed/MD and may have direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic leadership and oversight of teaching and assessment of professionalism, ethics and law within the current Medicine program.
  • Collaborate with the Medicine Program Redesign team to lead the development, integration and delivery of professionalism, ethics and law content in the redesigned Medicine program curriculum, including integration of the Faculty’s Professionalism Student Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure curriculum design reflects contemporary developments in medical ethics, legal frameworks, regulatory requirements, and professional practice standards.
  • Develop and lead high-quality student learning experiences, including lectures, small-group teaching, tutorials, workshops and online modules.
  • Design and develop innovative learning and assessment approaches, including lectures, small-group teaching, workshops and online modules.
  • Lead the development and implementation of assessment strategies that validly and reliably assess professionalism, ethics and law and integrate with learning and assessment in areas of the program.
  • Maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders (e.g. Program Director, Medicine Redesign team, Blakcademy, Phase and Discipline leads and other clinical academics) and external stakeholders (e.g. health services, regulatory and professional bodies, clinicians).
  • Undertake educational scholarship and contribute to the evidence base in medical professionalism, ethics, and law education.
  • Supervise and mentor junior academic staff and casual educators involved in teaching in this discipline.
  • Contribute to the academic governance of the BMedMD program, including participation in relevant committees and working groups.
  • Maintain an excellent standard of professional practice in accordance with UNSW’s Code of Conduct, and champion equity, diversity and inclusivity in education.

Selection Criteria

  • A medical or relevant health professional qualification, with expertise in medical ethics, professionalism and the relevant legal frameworks and laws.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in medical education, relevant to these domains.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
  • Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
