HDR in PT-Sines is seeking a Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to support commissioning on data centre and mission‑critical projects. The role involves coordinating with multiple teams, performing inspections, and ensuring readiness through L2–L5 testing stages.

Responsibilities include documentation, reporting, and supporting FATs and IST windows, including high‑risk testing when required. Travel to live site locations is expected as needed.

Qualificações

  • Minimum 6–8 years in mechanical building services on data centre or mission‑critical projects.
  • At least 3–4 years directly involved in commissioning activities.
  • Experience with L4/L5 functional testing and IST.
  • Real site‑based commissioning experience; office‑only or witness‑only not sufficient.
  • Experience with chillers, cooling distribution, CRAH/CRAC, pumps, valves, sensors and BMS.

The Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer will support the Mechanical Lead Commissioning Authority with the planning, coordination, execution, and documentation of mechanical commissioning activities on data centre or other mission‑critical projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the Mechanical Lead Commissioning Authority with day‑to‑day mechanical commissioning activities.
  • Carry out site inspections, checks, and testing support.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with mechanical contractors, controls vendors, BMS teams, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Report issues clearly and early when systems are not ready, do not perform correctly, or do not behave as expected.
  • Support out‑of‑hours and high‑risk testing windows when required.
  • Review mechanical designs, drawings, and system information with commissioning, operations, and maintainability in mind.
  • Support reviews of cooling systems, cooling concepts, control strategies, operating sequences, redundancy arrangements, and plant configurations.
  • Help identify testability issues, control gaps, operational concerns, or system readiness risks.
  • Feed comments, observations, and risks back to the Mechanical Lead Commissioning Authority.
  • Support the production, review, and execution of commissioning documentation, including L2 and L3 checklists, contractor checklists, test evidence, L4 functional test scripts, and L5 Integrated Systems Testing documentation.
  • Capture test results, observations, issues, red‑lines, and changes accurately.
  • Ensure changes and commissioning observations are properly recorded and communicated.
  • Be on site to support mechanical commissioning activities throughout construction, pre‑functional testing, functional testing, and IST.
  • Support or attend FATs where required, including for chillers, packaged plant, controls, and associated mechanical systems.
  • Support and witness pressure testing, flushing and cleaning, chemical treatment, pre‑functional checks, and functional testing.
  • Verify that plant and systems are genuinely ready before progressing into L4 functional testing and L5 IST.
  • Escalate safety, stability, performance, or sequencing issues immediately.
  • Support Level 5 Integrated Systems Testing under the direction of the Mechanical Lead Commissioning Authority.
  • Assist with normal operation testing, cooling failure and recovery scenarios, power‑loss and restart conditions, and other integrated system tests.
  • Coordinate closely during IST with electrical commissioning engineers, BMS / controls teams, load bank providers, and IT load teams.
  • Observe mechanical system behaviour during testing and feed back clear findings to the Mechanical Lead Commissioning Authority.
  • Support compilation of commissioning records, test results, snag lists, close‑out records, and handover documentation.
  • Assist with O&M manual reviews, as‑built reviews, training support, and final handover activities where required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6–8 years of experience working with mechanical building services on data centre or other mission‑critical projects.
  • At least 3–4 years of direct involvement in commissioning activities.
  • Experience supporting L4 functional testing and L5 Integrated Systems Testing.
  • Real site‑based commissioning experience; office‑only or witness‑only experience is not sufficient.
  • Practical experience with most of the following systems:
    • Chillers, including air‑cooled and/or water‑cooled systems
    • Cooling distribution systems
    • CRAH / CRAC units
    • Pumps, valves, sensors, and control devices
    • BMS integration and monitoring
  • Understanding of how cooling systems behave during failures, recovery sequences, power loss, and restarts.
  • Ability to work on live sites and around operating plant during commissioning and testing.
  • Practical, site‑focused approach with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify and elevate safety, stability, performance, or readiness concerns promptly.
  • Clear communication skills when reporting issues, observations, and test results.
  • Reliability under pressure, particularly during critical testing periods and out‑of‑hours works.
  • Willingness to speak up when something does not look right.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent technical experience.
  • Commissioning certifications such as CCP, ACP, or equivalent.
  • Controls or BMS experience.
  • Experience supporting FATs for chillers, packaged plant, controls, or other mechanical systems.
  • Experience with data centre cooling systems and resilience strategies.
  • Experience supporting IST involving cooling failure, power‑loss, restart, and recovery scenarios.
  • Familiarity with electrical system interfaces, BMS / controls integration, load bank testing, and IT load coordination.
  • Experience supporting commissioning close‑out, O&M reviews, as‑built reviews, training, and handover activities.
  • Interest in progressing toward a Mechanical Lead Commissioning Authority role.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 4 years of industry experience dealing with mechanical, electrical and controls disciplines
  • Proven ability to lead commissioning efforts from design through project completion
  • Should have a passion for sustainability and knowledge of the commissioning process and experience with design, installation and operation of building systems (including but not limited to: HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and controls)
  • Must be willing to travel to site‑based locations as reasonably based on HDR needs
  • Must have demonstrated ability to troubleshoot HVAC, TAB, and Controls and have excellent report writing skills
  • Must have a solid understanding of operational requirements, safety requirements, code inspections and maintenance considerations
  • Strong written, verbal communication and time management skills; exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to interact with people at all levels
  • Technical knowledge of MEP systems and HVAC expertise
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Multitasking ability
  • Valid driver's license
