Descrição da oferta de emprego

The Miguel Soares Lab at GIMM is recruiting a Laboratory Technician

GIMM – Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine is a pioneering Portuguese private research foundation with an ambitious vision of fundamental scientific exploration and its profound impact on global health and well-being. Founded in 2023, GIMM is the result of the merger of two leading research institutes: Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM) and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), which is dedicated to uncovering the fundamental mysteries of life and aims to be at the forefront of transdisciplinary research.

The Soares Lab (Inflammation Laboratory ) at GIMM investigates how resistance and disease tolerance, the two evolutionarily conserved components of the protective response to infection, interact to limit the fitness costs imposed by pathogens. While resistance operates through the immune system to sense and eliminate pathogens, disease tolerance operates through metabolic and stress-response mechanisms that mitigate the damage caused by infection without targeting the pathogen itself. Our research relies heavily on experimental mouse models of disease, using different infection paradigms combined with genetically engineered mouse strains. These strains are generated through the Cre-lox system and allow both gain- and loss-of-function approaches to be applied in a cell-specific manner. This allows to identify the mechanisms that underlie protection against infection by different classes of virulent pathogens.

What the Soares Lab is looking for:

The laboratory aims to recruit a laboratory technician to provide technical support for its mouse programme, under the supervision of a senior research technician. The successful candidate will work at the Oeiras site and focus on day-to-day colony maintenance and PCR genotyping, receiving hands‑on training and mentorship.

  • BSc or higher degree in Animal Sciences, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or equivalent;
  • Hands‑on experience with mouse handling (rodent facility or scientific research context);
  • Basic molecular biology knowledge and skills (PCR);
  • Fluency in English.
Preferencial criteria:
  • MSc in Animal Sciences, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or equivalent;
  • Experience with breeding and maintenance transgenic or knockout mouse lines;
  • Experience in colony management;
  • Familiarity with in vivo infection models;
  • Experience working in a BSL‑2 environment;
  • Valid personal license for functions A, C and D, under current legislation.
The selected candidate will have:
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out rigorous technical work, with a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail;

  • Commitment to the principles of animal welfare and compliance with applicable national and European legislation;
  • Eagerness to learn, receptiveness to instruction, and consistency in daily routines;

The selected candidate will have a health insurance covered by the institution.
