Sodecia is a global automotive supplier delivering innovative engineering and manufacturing solutions to leading OEMs worldwide. As part of our Global Purchasing Organization, we are looking for a Buyer – BOM Commodity & Resident Buyer to join our Purchasing team.
This is a unique dual-role opportunity combining Commodity Management for a specific Bill of Materials (BOM) category across Sodecia's European Operations with the responsibilities of Resident Buyer supporting our Guarda Plant.
The position can be based in Porto or Guarda, and requires a strong on-site presence in both locations. The successful candidate must be willing and available to travel frequently between Porto and Guarda, acting as a key link between the plant operations and the Global Purchasing organization.
This role offers a blend of strategic sourcing, supplier relationship management, operational purchasing support, and cross-functional collaboration in an international automotive environment.
About the Role
The Buyer will be responsible for managing an assigned BOM commodity portfolio across Europe while supporting the purchasing activities of the Guarda Plant. This position requires close collaboration with Manufacturing, Engineering, Logistics, Program Management, Quality, Finance, and Global Purchasing teams.
Given the dual nature of the role, the selected candidate will regularly divide their time between the Porto Corporate Office and the Guarda Plant to ensure strong alignment between corporate purchasing strategies and plant operational needs.
Location & Travel Requirements
- Position based in Porto or Guarda, Portugal.
- Frequent travel between Porto and Guarda is a key requirement of this role.
- Regular on-site presence at the Guarda Plant is expected to support operations, projects, supplier activities, and management meetings.
- Availability for occasional national and international travel.
Key Responsibilities
Commodity Management (European Scope)
- Manage an assigned BOM commodity portfolio across Sodecia's European Operations.
- Develop and implement sourcing strategies aligned with business objectives and commodity roadmaps.
- Lead supplier selection, RFIs, RFQs, commercial negotiations, and contract management.
- Support supplier nomination for new business awards and engineering changes.
- Identify cost reduction opportunities through value analysis, benchmarking, and productivity initiatives.
- Monitor supplier performance in terms of quality, cost, delivery, capacity, and sustainability.
- Support supplier development and risk mitigation activities together with cross-functional teams.
- Maintain market intelligence and monitor raw material trends affecting the assigned commodity.
Resident Buyer – Guarda Plant
- Act as the primary Purchasing representative for the Guarda Plant.
- Serve as the main interface between plant management and the Global Purchasing organization.
- Support production continuity by coordinating supplier-related issues, shortages, and escalation management.
- Participate in management meetings and ensure alignment between plant priorities and purchasing strategies.
- Support new product launches, transfers, and industrialization projects from a purchasing perspective.
- Coordinate local sourcing activities when required, in accordance with Global Purchasing policies.
- Ensure timely communication between suppliers, the plant, and corporate purchasing functions.
- Prepare sourcing recommendations and business cases for internal approval.
- Ensure procurement data is maintained accurately in ERP and purchasing systems.
- Support governance processes and compliance with corporate procurement policies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across purchasing and supply chain processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or a related field.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of purchasing experience, preferably within the automotive industry.
- Experience in strategic sourcing of direct materials (BOM).
- Strong negotiation, supplier development, and commercial management skills.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams in a manufacturing environment.
- Good knowledge of SAP or other ERP procurement systems.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Advanced English proficiency.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel frequently between Porto and Guarda.
- Availability for national and international travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a Resident Buyer or Plant Buyer.
- Knowledge of APQP, PPAP, IATF 16949, and project purchasing processes.
- Experience supporting new product introductions (NPI) and industrialization projects.
- Lean and Continuous Improvement mindset.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
