Job summary

Hitachi Energy Poland is seeking a Research Scientist to design, prototype, and optimize software systems for training and deploying ML and agentic applications across edge, GPU servers, HPC clusters, and cloud environments.

You will collaborate globally with researchers to lead R&D projects, evaluate ML frameworks, and disseminate results through papers and patents while engaging with partners and universities to advance power-system applications.

Qualifications

• Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field.
• Strong software-engineering skills including architecture, implementation, testing, and performance analysis.
• Hands-on experience building ML training and inference pipelines beyond notebook experiments.
• Knowledge of model serving, APIs, containers, and cloud or on-prem deployments.
• Familiar with HPC architectures on premises and in the cloud.
• Experience with modern design patterns, languages, frameworks, and stacks.
• Willingness to mix conceptual work with hands-on tasks.
• Ability to collaborate in varying team sizes and with cross-functional experts.
• Fluency in English, written and spoken.

The opportunity

We are looking for a Research Scientist to design, prototype and optimize software systems for training and deploying machine-learning and agentic applications. You will investigate how modern computing platforms, from edge devices and GPU servers to high-performance computing clusters and cloud environments, can support demanding industrial grade power-system applications.

How you will make an impact

• Collaborate with a global team of researchers and engineers in Hitachi Energy business units to identify and solve real-world challenges for our customers through expertise in software applications for Power systems.
• Propose, contribute to and lead research and development projects creating ML inference and training pipelines leveraging HPC.
• Work with a multitude of technologies and stacks, for systems spanning from on premise edge device, embedded, single server up to the scalable cloud-based solutions.
• Evaluate emerging ML frameworks, serving technologies, accelerators, and development tools.
• Network in the company and actively distribute your knowledge and expertise.
• Provide consultancy in your field of expertise to our business units.
• Collaborate with local and global external partners including universities, open-source communities, startups and vendors.
• Disseminate your results in scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports.

Your background

• Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or in a related field.

• Strong software-engineering skills, including architecture, implementation, testing and performance analysis.
• Hands-on experience building ML training and inference pipelines beyond notebook-based experimentation.
• Knowledge of model serving, APIs, containers, and deployment in cloud or on-premises environments.
• Familiar with modern cluster and GPU/TPU based HPC architectures on premises and in the cloud.
• Know-how of modern design patterns, methodologies, programming languages, frameworks and stacks.
• Willingness to mix conceptual activities with hands-on work.
• Ability to adapt to different team sizes - from single-person studies to participation in large teams.
• Willingness to take an interdisciplinary approach, working with experts from domains away from own area of expertise.
• Experience that demonstrates your team-oriented, innovative, and strategic working styles.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

In addition, the following skills would be beneficial for the role:

• Experience with large code bases.
• Experience working with large datasets, synthetic data, or simulation-generated training data.
• Familiarity with ML lifecycle practices, including experiment tracking, model evaluation, artifact management, monitoring, and continuous integration.
• Model-serving technologies such as ONNX Runtime, Triton, vLLM, or equivalent.
• Observability and evaluation of ML and agentic applications.
