GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to provide technical leadership across teams, driving modular architecture, AI-enabled workflows, and scalable systems. You will guide cross-cutting backend initiatives, set engineering standards, and mentor engineers while shaping platform strategy and investments.

This is a remote, globally distributed role with a focus on delivering secure, reliable software at scale.

Qualifications

• Proven record of technical leadership across multiple teams or areas.
• Deep backend architecture and production experience in complex apps or platforms.
• Experience modernizing a monolith toward modular, scalable architecture.
• Ability to influence with clear written proposals and decision records.

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-cutting backend initiatives spanning teams and domains.
• Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture evolution.
• Set and improve standards for APIs, contracts, testing, security, and operability.
• Create patterns for dependency management, data ownership, and service maturity.
• Participate in on-call for systems owned by your teams and drive improvements.
• Mentor engineers and grow technical capability across the team.
• Lead AI-assisted workflows and governance across teams.
