Job summary

GitLab is hiring an Intermediate Backend Engineer. You will take backend features from concept to delivery, collaborating with Product, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security to ship secure, scalable services.

You’ll write maintainable code in Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages, and work in a remote-first, asynchronous environment with tenured engineers reviewing your work. You’ll design and maintain APIs, background jobs, and data models, while driving quality, security, and performance.

Qualifications

• Backend fundamentals including API, database, testing, debugging, and performance.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages; learning ability valued.
• Ability to own feature from clarification to delivery and follow-up, independently.
• Strong sense of security, reliability, performance, and operational risk awareness.
• Excellent written communication and collaboration in a remote, asynchronous setting.
• Practical experience with AI coding tools and validating AI outputs.

Responsibilities

• Own and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance in modern languages.
• Build for production: APIs, background jobs, data models, migrations, and performance considerations.
• Test and review: increase automated coverage and review others’ code for quality and security.
• Operate what you build: troubleshoot build/test/deploy issues and participate in on-call when required.
• Leverage AI: apply AI thoughtfully, verify results, understand limitations.
