Job summary

The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is seeking a Special Education teacher to provide direct instruction in virtual and in-person settings, collaborating with general education staff and home school teams to support students with disabilities.

DESCRIPTION

Under direction of the Coordinator, Beyond School Hours and Summer Programs, the Special Education teacher provides direct instruction separately in both virtual and in-person environments (hybrid instruction will not be included) and instructional support primarily to students with disabilities assigned to extended out-of-school suspension. The Special Education teacher works in collaboration with the general education teachers and the student’s home school team members. Special Educators perform case management responsibilities that include supporting implementation and monitoring of Individual Education Program plans while students participate in Evening School in collaboration with the teachers, related service providers, families, and the student.

To support an alternative schedule for students and programming, this position requires the following hours:

Monday – Thursday: 12:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Bachelor’s degreeor higher

Certification/Licensure:

• Meets Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Professional licensure requirements for Special Education (grades 6-12 ) licensure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Three previous years of teaching experience in the field of Special Education.

• Holds a current Maryland State Department of Education license in Special Education (Grades 6-12).

• Serves as a member of the IEP team as appropriate.

• Interprets both informal, and classroom-based assessment for students in order to make instructional decisions.

• Collects data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.

• Administers and interprets formal assessments as appropriate.

• Selects and adapts materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum, as appropriate.

• Communicate effectively with students and families in an effort to share updates and progress.

• Participates in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in the areas of instruction, best practices, differentiated instruction, changes in educational policy, and other information as may be necessary to improve classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.

• Supervises and plans for the continuing professional development of paraeducators assigned to the classroom.

• Sets up and operates equipment; uses assistive technology to support student learning and communication and other equipment.

• Helps maintain order and discipline and assists in managing the behavior of students, including crisis intervention.

• Assists with routine care, including personal hygiene, toileting, feeding and other custodial tasks, as required or requested.
