Job summary

Cisco Systems, Inc. is building the next-generation, highly scalable search platform powering AI-driven workflows across our product suite.

You will join a team of distributed-systems engineers responsible for the core search engine’s evolution, reliability, and performance at scale. You will design and implement features powering Splunk’s flagship search capabilities, contribute to robust distributed systems, and collaborate with product and cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering with a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• Proficient in C++, with the ability to quickly learn Python, Java, or Go.
• Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, operating systems and software design.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills including the use of associated tools.
• Experience in distributed systems like databases, file systems and storage systems.
• Experience with developing CI/CD systems, test automation frameworks, and integrating AI coding assistants and agentic workflows into development and testing practices.
• Experience in REST, gRPC, or similar communication paradigms.
• Experience working with public cloud services such as AWS, GCP, Azure.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and launch features directly powering Splunk’s core search functionalities across our product ecosystem.
• Build robust, fault-tolerant and scalable distributed systems in a multi-threaded/multi-process environment.
• Define and perform various search language layer optimizations/transformations.
• Analyze and improve reliability, and scalability of search execution pipelines.
• Diagnose and solve customer incidents and issues, reflect and identify gaps in product, observability and process, and design and deliver enhancements for prevention.
• Hire, mentor junior engineers and grow talents on the team.

The Splunk Search Experience backend team sits at the core of the Splunk Platform, powering Cisco Data Fabric (https://investor.cisco.com/news/news-details/2025/Cisco-Data-Fabric-Transforms-Machine-Data-into-AI-Ready Intelligence/default.aspx) vision to transform machine data into AI-ready intelligence. We are seeking a Software Engineers to join a team of passionate distributed-systems engineers in building the next-generation, highly scalable search platform that fuels AI-driven workflows across our products.

Your Impact
In this role, you will be part of the team driving the evolution of Splunk’s flagship search engine capabilities, ensuring the platform meets the next wave of customer scale, performance, and reliability needs. Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• Coding proficiency in C++, and the ability to quickly learn new ones, especially Python, Java, or Go.
• Strong fundamentals in software engineering: data structures, algorithms, operating systems and software design.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills including the use of associated tools.
• Experience in working on distributed systems like databases, file systems and storage systems.
• Experience with developing CI/CD systems, test automation frameworks, and integrating AI coding assistants and agentic workflows into development and testing practices.
• Experience in REST, grpc, or similar communication paradigms.
• Experience working with public cloud services such as AWS, GCP, Azure.

Preferred Qualifications

• Passion for solving hard problems and exploring new technologies.
• Knowledge of deploying and managing services in Kubernetes clusters.
• Knowledge of query language and processing like SQL, SPL, etc.
