Job Description

The Pawtucket School Department is seeking social workers to support students with behavioral, social-emotional, or physical problems. They counsel students whose behavior, school progress, or mental or physical disability indicates a need for assistance. They consult with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine causes of problems and effect solutions. They arrange for medical, psychiatric, and other examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures. They attempt to alter attitudes and behaviors of parents and teachers that cause or aggravate problems. They serve as a liaison between home, school, and community resources, protective services, doctors, and clergy members. They serve as a consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that are not referred for district service.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the development of individualized behavioral programs for students based on their unique special needs.
• Consult with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine causes of problems and effect solutions.
• Provide individual and group counseling to students who are determined to be in need of such services.
• Arrange for medical, psychiatric, and other examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures.
• Recommend changes in educational/behavioral program or other treatment to effect remedy.
• Participate in meetings such as Response to Intervention (RTI), Section 504/ADA, and Special Education evaluation/IEP meetings when scheduled.
• Serve as a liaison between school and community resources, such as family service agencies, child guidance clinics, protective services such as DCYF, and doctors.
• Consult with school personnel with respect to students or situations which are not referred to the social worker for direct service.
• Maintain records necessary for the performance of responsibilities.
• Have knowledge of the levels systems in place for the student and be able to assist students in graduating to higher levels.
• Perform social assessments and adaptive behavior skill assessments to determine students’ needs.
• Perform crisis intervention to students, school personnel, and family on a needed basis.
• May be required to conduct home visits with parents (guardians) to review and discuss student’s needs and recommendations established.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director or Building Principal.

• Common Core Standards and RICAS, PSAT, SAT, and ACCESS assessment.
• Requirements of identifying and reporting abuse/neglect.
• The related laws of Rhode Island, as they relate to IDEA, RTI, and ADA requirements, regulations, and procedures of the Pawtucket School Department and the Rhode Island Department of Education.
• Instructional materials and their relationship to program goals and objectives.
• Principles of effective management and evaluation of instruction.
• Principles of learning; principles of effective instruction.
• Assessment administration and use, both formative and summative.
• School accountability.
• Data analysis techniques.
