Job Summary

The Scituate School Department seeks a collaborative, student-centered Special Education Teacher for a long‑term substitute position in grades HS/MS. Responsibilities include planning and delivering high‑quality, specially designed instruction, developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and supporting students with disabilities to achieve academic, social, emotional, and functional success.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver instruction aligned with IEPs, Rhode Island standards, and district curriculum.
  • Differentiate instruction using evidence‑based practices, accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology.
  • Provide instruction in inclusive, co‑taught, resource, or specialized settings as assigned.
  • Promote student independence, self‑advocacy, executive functioning, and social‑emotional development.
  • Utilize UDL, differentiated instruction, and evidence‑based interventions to maximize achievement.
  • Support positive behavior through classroom management and individualized behavior support plans.
  • Administer and interpret formal and informal assessments to monitor progress.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise IEPs in compliance with federal, state, and district requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of progress, IEP implementation, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with teachers, specialists, related service providers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and families to design and implement effective instructional programs.
  • Participate in PLCs, MTSS meetings, eligibility meetings, and IEP Team meetings.
  • Provide guidance to paraprofessionals to ensure consistent implementation of instructional strategies and supports.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Demonstrate ongoing professional learning, reflect on instructional practice, and comply with all federal and state special education laws.
Qualifications
  • Rhode Island certification in Special Education.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, Rhode Island Special Education Regulations, and the IEP process.
  • Knowledge of evidence‑based instructional practices, differentiation, UDL, and specially designed instruction.
  • Experience using student performance data to develop, implement, monitor, and adjust instructional programs.
  • Experience guiding paraprofessionals in implementing instructional programs, accommodations, and behavioral supports.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to creating equitable, inclusive, and supportive learning environments.
  • Compliance with Rhode Island Department of Education certification requirements.
  • Preferred: 1+ years of teaching experience in special education; experience in inclusive or resource settings; MTSS experience; multidisciplinary teamwork; experience with autism spectrum disorders, emotional/behavioral needs, developmental disabilities, complex learning needs; supporting multilingual learners; MLL endorsement.
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, student information systems, and special education management software.
  • Strong data analysis skills, oral and written communication, problem‑solving, time management, and willingness to grow.

  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the Scituate Teachers' Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employment contingent upon successful background checks, including fingerprint‑based criminal history.
  • Citizenship, legal residency, or authorization to work in the United States is required.
  • Position is full‑time and long‑term substitute.
