Philip Morris International is seeking a skilled Backend Engineer for our IoT Platform team in Kraków. You will implement scalable backend services, APIs, and AI-driven enhancements for connected devices and data pipelines.

You will work with architects and developers, translating designs into robust solutions using Python/Node.js on AWS, while promoting secure, efficient CI/CD and AI-assisted practices across the backend chapter.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Backend Engineer to join our IoT Platform team. This role is critical to delivering the new initiatives, focusing on scalable backend services that support our connected devices and data-driven operations.

Your Day to Day

• Work closely with architects to translate solution designs into scalable and maintainable backend implementations
• Lead and contribute to technical discussions, providing guidance and support across the team
• Build backend services supporting large-scale IoT ecosystems, handling real-time data streams and event-driven architectures
• Develop and maintain backend services and APIs for the IoT platform.
• Implement scalable and secure solutions using AWS cloud services.
• Develop microservices and server-side logic using Python and Node.js.
• Lead adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices across the backend chapter (e.g. code generation, automated code review, documentation, and test creation)
• Drive integration of Generative AI services (e.g. AWS Bedrock) into backend services and developer workflows to enable smarter automation and new product capabilities
• Promote usage of AI tools (e.g. Copilot, internal agents) to improve developer productivity and reduce delivery cycle time
• Define guardrails for responsible AI usage (security, compliance, data privacy)
• Design and evolve intelligent CI/CD pipelines leveraging AI to automate test generation, detect failures and suggest root causes, and optimise performance and deployment quality
• Explore and experiment with new technologies, particularly in AI and cloud-native development, to continuously improve engineering practices and product capabilities
• Foster and build a culture of actively engaging team members in engineering and design discussions
• Introduce AI-assisted code review practices to improve consistency and reduce manual review effort
• Drive automated quality gates using static + AI-based analysis
• Actively participate in PI sessions to ensure a thorough understanding of business requirements and maintain alignment throughout the project.
• Ensure high-quality delivery practices across the development lifecycle, including releases, testing, and documentation

Who We Are Looking For

• University degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
• Proven experience as a Backend Engineer
• Understanding of SAFe, excellent communication skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
• Strong experience in backend development using languages such as Python or Node.js, with solid understanding of modern software design principles
• Familiarity with RESTful API design.
• Expertise in all common AWS Cloud technologies, Knowledge of CI/CD tools and workflows.
• Experience or strong interest in AI-assisted software development (e.g. Copilot, LLM-based tools, AWS Bedrock) and its application to engineering productivity and product innovation
• Experience with observability platforms (logs, metrics, tracing)
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code and GitOps practices
• A keen eye to quality with regards to following and establishing good coding practices, improving code coverage.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build strong relationships with stakeholders
• Good communication skills, with the ability to articulate thoughts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
