Job summary

Hozah is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to own a product area, shaping architecture and collaborating with customers to define needs. You will work across Kotlin backend with Spring Boot WebFlux and TypeScript frontend, using AI coding agents in a small, product-minded team.

Qualifications

• You’re comfortable across the stack, able to tweak a React/Next.js frontend or work against an API contract.

Role Overview

You will build the products drivers and car park operators use every day: ANPR camera enforcement, pay-by-web, Autopay, permits, a client console and a motorist account app, across about 160 sites, and the new products we build next. We are a small engineering team, and we form teams around the work from the people we have.

We work in Kotlin on the backend (Spring Boot WebFlux, a domain-driven layering of domain, edge services and repository, Postgres, Axon event sourcing and Pub/Sub) and in TypeScript with Next.js and React on the front end, on GCP and Kubernetes. You do not need to know Kotlin to apply. Our engineers work with AI coding agents day to day, and we are looking for people who use them well and check what they produce.

Every engineer here is product-minded. You will talk to the people who use what you build, decide with product people what is worth building, and find out afterwards whether it worked.

You will report to the CTO and work with a team that reviews each other’s work.

The Senior level

Senior Software Engineer. You own a product area: its architecture, how it is staged, its quality bar, and working out with customers what is needed. You may be the only engineer on a new product area, so you need to be able to work alone for weeks at a time and keep quality high without a peer reviewer. Other engineers will come to you for design review.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the delivery of what you are given, from the first ticket to production, with tests, and be the person who fixes it if it breaks.

• Talk to the people who use what you build, and use what you learn to shape and cut scope.

• Write acceptance criteria, and check a feature after release to see whether it was used and whether it worked.

• Work in our existing codebase and its layering, and keep it consistent for the next engineer.

• Use AI coding agents as part of how you work, and be accountable for everything you ship, however it was written.

• Take part in the on-call rota and look after what you ship.

• Review other engineers’ pull requests, and welcome review of your own.

• Own the architecture and staging of a product area, and the quality bar for it.

• Work out with customers what is needed, and give design review to other engineers.
  

Who we’re looking for

• You’re product-minded. In the last 12 months you’ve talked to real users or customers, and what you learned changed or cut the scope of what you built. You write acceptance criteria, you check a feature after release, and you can say whether something you shipped got used.

• You’ve shipped production code end to end in the last 12 months, in any language. You can say what you personally built, and what happened after it went live.

• You test as you build. You can describe a bug you shipped and the test that would have caught it.

• You use AI coding agents in real work today, and you can describe how you check what they produce, including a time one was wrong.

• You’re willing to be on call, and you take ownership of what you ship. You don’t need to have been on call before.

• You work well in an existing codebase with a layered or domain-driven structure that you did not design, and you read before you write.

• You’re comfortable across the stack. You’ve changed a React or Next.js front end, or worked properly against an API contract, even if you lean backend.

• You review others’ pull requests, finding real problems and saying so well, and you change your own design when review shows you a better way.

• You’ve owned a product area on your own, from first design to production, and staged it so each stage delivered something usable.

• Ideally, you’ve modelled a domain in which the rules change over time (such as pricing, eligibility, tax or regulation) and can answer “what was true on a given date”.

• You’ve kept quality high without a peer reviewer, and other engineers have come to you for design review.

You do not need a degree, a particular programming language, or Kotlin. Experience of Axon, Temporal, GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, parking or payments is welcome, but none of it is required.
