Job summary

Darwin Recruitment is seeking a Senior Ruby on Rails Engineer to join a 6-month freelance engagement delivering modern digital services for a UK public sector client. The role is remote, with 100% home-based delivery and nearshore collaboration.

You will focus on core Rails delivery: REST APIs, PostgreSQL migrations, background processing, and high-quality code with thorough automated tests in an agile, distributed team.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial Ruby on Rails experience.
• Strong PostgreSQL knowledge including safe migrations.
• Experience designing and building REST APIs.
• Background job processing with Sidekiq or Active Job.
• Thorough automated testing with RSpec.
• Ability to work independently in a remote agile team.
• Desirable: experience delivering for UK public sector.
• Must be based in Portugal, Poland or Romania.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Rails applications for a UK public sector client.

Project focus

You’ll join a Ruby on Rails delivery team building and enhancing digital services for a UK public sector client. The focus is core Rails feature delivery: building REST APIs, managing PostgreSQL data changes and migrations, implementing background processing and keeping quality high through well-tested code.

Key skills and Experience required

• 5+ years’ commercial experience with Ruby, primarily on Ruby on Rails applications
• Strong PostgreSQL experience, including writing and managing safe migrations
• Designing and building REST APIs
• Background job processing (e.g. Sidekiq, Active Job or similar)
• Writing thorough automated tests with RSpec
• Comfortable working independently within an agile, remote delivery team
• Experience delivering for UK public sector clients is highly desirable
• Must be based in Portugal, Poland or Romania
