Job summary

GitLab in a remote-friendly setup seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to drive backend features for the Plan team, owning scope, design, and implementation. You’ll work with Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, and GraphQL to build scalable, AI-enabled workflows and evaluation systems.

You’ll collaborate across product, design, and users, mentor peers, and help steer technical directions in an all-remote, async environment with rapid iterations and demos.

Qualifications

• Experience with Ruby on Rails in a large production codebase.
• End-to-end feature ownership from scoping to launch.
• Ability to mentor others and work across regions.

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from early discussions through design, rollout and post-launch learning.
• Build flows, APIs, and data models behind agent-generated work items.
• Develop evaluation systems for workflow quality and cost.
• Use Ruby on Rails and Python with PostgreSQL and GraphQL in production systems.
• Collaborate with product, design, engineers, and users to shape scope.
• Coordinate multi-person projects in an asynchronous, all-remote environment.
• Mentor engineers and influence technical direction within Plan group.
