Job summary

Payabl is seeking a Senior Python Backend Developer (Services) to evolve our service layer with reliable, scalable microservices. You will extract business logic from legacy code and reimplement it into modern Python services, focusing on correctness and long-term maintainability.

You will collaborate in Agile teams, design external APIs, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes infrastructure where relevant. Remote from Poland or Cyprus onsite arrangements apply.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Python expertise.
• Deep AsyncIO proficiency for non-blocking microservices.
• Production-grade FastAPI experience.
• Experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
• Testing discipline with unit and integration tests (pytest).
• Ownership mindset for high-traffic apps and distributed systems.
• Strong English communication across teams.

Responsibilities

• Legacy modernization: extract business logic from legacy code and reimplement in microservices.
• Ensure idempotency, data integrity, and graceful error handling.
• Balance greenfield development with refactoring legacy modules.
• API engineering: design and consume external APIs with complex retry policies.
• Collaborate in Agile with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
• Apply product thinking to understand end-user impact.
• Contribute to CI/CD, Docker, or Kubernetes infrastructure.
• Propose tools/techniques to improve performance and security.
