Job summary

SoftServe is seeking a Senior Java Engineer to build and maintain back-end services for a European public sector client focused on competition policy. You will own business logic, APIs, and data storage, using Java, Spring, Elasticsearch, and Kafka in a distributed architecture.

You will optimise performance, ensure security and data integrity, and collaborate with front-end teams to deliver scalable software. Strong Spring Framework, SQL/NoSQL, and CI/CD experience are essential.

Qualifications

• A university degree at master's level (or 5 years of higher education) with a minimum of 10 years of IT professional experience; or a degree at bachelor's level (or 3 years of higher education) with a minimum of 12 years
• Minimum 5 years of experience in software development and minimum 5 years developing Java applications, with proficiency in back-end languages (Java, PHP) and frameworks (Spring Boot, Hibernate, Node.js) and a strong understanding of the web development cycle
• Minimum 5 years of experience with the Spring Framework
• Minimum 3 years of experience with Elasticsearch, including data indexing, search optimisation, query design, and performance monitoring
• Minimum 3 years of experience with Apache Kafka, covering event streaming, message brokering, topic management, and integration within distributed system architectures
• Experience with REST API development, including designing, building, and securing RESTful APIs and web services with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation, and understanding of authentication and authorisation protocols and standards (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT)
• Experience with SQL databases, including relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL with complex SQL queries and database design, together with knowledge of NoSQL document stores (MongoDB, CouchDB, CosmosDB) and the consistency and performance trade-offs involved
• Experience working in Agile environments, with Git workflows (GitFlow, trunk-based) and an understanding of legacy systems using SVN, containerisation and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), APM tools (Dynatrace, Splunk, Elastic APM) and OpenTelemetry for metrics, logs and traces, Case Management tools including workflow configuration, case lifecycle handling, user support and process optimisation, and professional experience in the area of competition policy
• Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, corresponding to Level B2 or higher (CEFR)

Responsibilities

• Develop back-end web applications and services, implement core business logic, and design and develop APIs
• Optimise applications for maximum speed and scalability, and apply data and security best practices — input validation, authentication and authorisation, secure storage, and compliant logging and monitoring — including the mechanisms that secure API endpoints and services
• Integrate user-facing elements developed by front-end developers with server-side logic, and take part with the team in the design and creation of scalable software
• Design and implement data storage solutions, and develop and maintain services and business logic using one or more back-end programming languages
• Write clean, functional code on the back end, and maintain code integrity and organisation
• Write and maintain unit and integration tests to ensure code quality and reliability, integrate them into the CI/CD pipeline, and debug, fix, and validate code changes
• Compile and analyse data, processes, and code to troubleshoot problems and identify areas for improvement, including setting up and querying monitoring tools
• Perform basic configuration of cloud services for back-end functionality such as serverless functions, storage accounts, and managed Kubernetes, deliver solutions that fulfil functional and non-functional requirements, and write technical documentation
