Job Description
Senior Firmware Engineer - Pathfinding in the Data Center Engineering (DCE) group. Responsible for developing novel SSD innovation prototypes, tackling complex technical challenges, and deriving optimized solutions in an environment with constrained timing and memory resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop embedded software for constrained environments, focusing on prototyping proofs of concepts for new storage innovations.
- Design and implement reusable code, debug, root‑cause issues, and validate firmware architecture and implementations.
- Create novel firmware algorithms and mechanisms related to new drive features such as Flash Translation Layer, garbage collection, workload optimization, performance quality of service, and data placement.
- Perform unit and integration testing to prove code viability and collaborate with architects and IP leads to define firmware scope and delivery milestones.
- Assist in creating metrics for evaluating new functions and collect data to inform future firmware architecture directions.
- Provide analysis on tradeoffs between technical approaches and make recommendations based on data.
Minimum Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in software or firmware development, integration and validation in embedded systems with C/C++ programming.
- Embedded firmware development running on a real‑time operating system, with hardware and software interactions.
- Experience with firmware development environments including compilers, debuggers, emulators, and toolchains.
Preferred Experience
- Proficiency in Python and Linux scripting for data parsing, automation, and processing.
- Experience with enterprise fabric and storage interface protocols (PCIe, NVMe, ENet, FC, IB).
- Experience with source control and code review systems such as Git.
- Creative and analytical problem‑solving skills, with ability to jump into diverse technical areas.
- Customer requirements definition, clarification, and technical assessment.
- Development of unit tests for code coverage and quality validation.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for documenting designs and conveying technical concepts.
- Project planning, estimation, and risk management.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and collaborate with geographically distributed teams.
Academic Credentials
BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
