Job summary

EG is seeking a Lead Database Administrator to own the end-to-end database estate across on-prem VMware and public cloud. You will set and enforce standards, drive reliability, and lead automation efforts while collaborating with application teams on schema design and performance.

This is a senior, hands-on role with no direct reports, but you become the technical authority on databases. You will manage lifecycle, backups, HA/DR, security, and monitoring across multi-platform environments,

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on DBA experience owning a database estate.
• Strong production experience with MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
• Experience with cloud-native/managed databases (Azure SQL, RDS).
• Proven ability to define and enforce operational standards for backups, HA/DR, and security.
• Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, and production incident analysis.
• Infrastructure-as-Code experience (Terraform, Ansible) applied to database provisioning.
• Comfortable operating in both on-prem VMware and public cloud environments.
• Fluent English, written and spoken.

Responsibilities

• Own the full database estate across on-premises VMware and public cloud (AWS, Azure) — what exists, ownership, criticality, and state.
• Act as the single point of accountability for the database domain in the organization.
• Own the roadmap for database platform lifecycle — versions, end-of-support, upgrades, decommissioning.
• Define configuration, security, backup, and operational standards for supported databases.
• Establish monitoring and compliance checks to catch deviations automatically.
• Own and improve database runbooks, documentation, and governance artifacts.
• Design and validate high-availability and backup strategies; regularly test restore procedures.
• Lead performance tuning, capacity planning, and troubleshooting for production workloads.
• Own patching and version-upgrade planning across the estate.
• Drive automation of provisioning, monitoring, and routine maintenance tasks.
• Evaluate and introduce tooling that improves visibility, self-service, and consistency.
• Work with application teams on schema design, query performance, and data-related incident response.
• Mentor engineers who touch databases day-to-day.
• Represent the database domain in capacity planning, architecture reviews, and cross-team ceremonies.
