Job summary

Starburst is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Control Plane, to join our globally distributed engineering team. You will design and build backend services and cloud infrastructure that run in both self-managed and SaaS deployments, across AWS/Azure/GCP and on-premise.

You will own the reliability, performance, and scalability of provisioning APIs, cluster lifecycle management, and operational tooling, while collaborating with teams worldwide in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Extensive Java backend development experience.
• Cloud infrastructure and orchestration experience across major cloud providers.
• Experience building and operating backend services — APIs, control loops, lifecycle management.
• Familiarity with AI coding tools and agents in day-to-day engineering.
• Good software engineering practices and maintainability in a globally distributed team.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the Unified Control Plane by delivering shared capabilities for SaaS and self-managed deployments.
• Own the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of provisioning APIs and cluster lifecycle tooling.
• Build for both SaaS and customer-operated deployments across AWS, Azure, and GCP as well as on-premise.
• Provide thoughtful PR and design reviews and collaborate with distributed teams.
• Help improve engineering processes, tests, and systems to scale the codebase and team productivity.
