Job summary

GitLab is hiring a Backend Engineer to join the Change Record team within the Source Code stage. You will build secure, well-tested backend features using Ruby on Rails and GraphQL, ensuring reliability for GitLab.com, self-managed, and GitLab Dedicated environments.

You will work remotely from the United Kingdom or Poland, collaborating across teams and embracing AI-assisted coding while maintaining high-quality software and strong on-call readiness.

Qualifications

• Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs with Ruby and GraphQL.
• Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and backend performance practices.
• Experience with full-stack development to build and maintain user-facing workflows and underlying systems.
• Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and code reviews.
• Clear written and spoken English communication in a remote, asynchronous environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby on Rails and GraphQL.
• Work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting reliability.
• Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic that support intuitive source code workflows.
• Collaborate across functions and teams, asynchronously and synchronously, involving domain experts when needed.
• Use AI coding agents to speed up development while critically reviewing their output.
• Write maintainable code that follows GitLab's standards and participate in code reviews.
• Strengthen reliability by monitoring production health metrics, contributing to on-call, troubleshooting incidents, and improving observability and resiliency.
• Share knowledge through code reviews, documentation, and collaboration.
