payabl. is expanding its engineering capabilities with a Senior Backend Developer to join the Core Gateway team. The role blends maintaining a Perl-based payment gateway with building a new Python microservices platform, aiming for performance, reliability, and scalability in a live payments environment.

Location options include remote work from Poland or onsite relocation to Cyprus. You will collaborate across departments in an agile context, contribute to architectural decisions, and help

Qualifications

• 5+ years backend engineering with Python mastery (AsyncIO and FastAPI).
• Experience with Perl production code and polyglot refactoring anticipated.
• Solid API integration and retry policy understanding (webhooks).
• CI/CD pipelines experience (GitLab), Docker, and AWS familiarity.
• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka).

Responsibilities

• Dual-Track Maintenance: support and extend the Perl gateway during migration.
• Modernization: design and maintain Python server-side components with high performance and scalability.
• Integrations: connect third-party APIs and payment services across legacy and modern layers.
• Agile Collaboration: communicate in English with stakeholders across teams in sprints.
• Product Thinking: understand business impact of features beyond code and design.
• Engineering Standards: participate in code reviews and uphold quality.
• Infrastructure: collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD, containers, and cloud deployments.
