Job summary

Adecco Portugal is seeking a skilled Mainframe Subject Matter Expert to support modernization efforts that blend legacy mainframe technologies with AI capabilities. The role centers on bridging traditional mainframe environments with AI-driven solutions and agent-based workflows.

You will design, implement, and optimize mainframe batch processes, work with COBOL/JCL, and contribute to modernization roadmaps while collaborating with diverse stakeholders.

Qualifications

• High proficiency in COBOL and JCL.
• Experience maintaining and enhancing mainframe batch processes.
• Experience with mainframe tools such as IDCAMS, SORT, CA-7, Control-M.
• Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and applying them to enterprise workflows.
• Ability to design and implement agent-based workflows in production systems.

For our client we are looking for a specialist of Mainframe Subject Matter Expert.

Location: Poland (remote)

Employment Type: Full-time

Experience Level: mid/senior

Experience Required: 3- 5+ years and 5- 10+ years (we are hiring for two seniority levels)

Contract type: B2B Contract

Contract duration: 12 months with a strong possibility of later extension. The client is looking for long-term cooperation.

We are looking for experienced Mainframe Subject Matter Expert to support modernization initiatives that combine traditional mainframe technologies with emerging AI capabilities. This role is ideal for professionals who have deep expertise in legacy systems and are excited about leveraging AI/ML and agent-based workflows to improve business processes, automation, and operational efficiency.

As a Mainframe SME, you will act as a trusted technical expert, helping bridge the gap between established mainframe environments and next-generation AI-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, maintain, and support mainframe applications and batch processes.
• Work with COBOL, JCL, Assembler, and related mainframe technologies to analyze and enhance existing systems.
• Manage and optimize file structures, copybooks, utilities, and scheduling processes.
• Collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to identify modernization opportunities.
• Support integration of AI/ML concepts into mainframe-driven workflows and business processes.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of agent-based workflows and automation solutions.
• Perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance optimization.
• Provide technical guidance and best practices to development and operations teams.
• Participate in architecture discussions and modernization roadmaps.

• Strong hands-on experience with:
• COBOL

• Mainframe file structures and copybooks
• Utilities such as SORT and IDCAMS
• Job schedulers including CA-7 and/or Control-M
• Understanding of mainframe application lifecycle and batch processing environments.
• Knowledge of AI/ML concepts and their practical application within enterprise environments.
• Experience or strong understanding of creating and managing agent workflows.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
