Job summary

Speechify, a remote-first tech company, seeks an Android Team Lead to own core features end-to-end, write and review code, and guide the team toward reliable, scalable releases. You will unblock work, consolidate shared components, and drive automated verification while mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on.
• Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
• Understanding the importance of tests and how to approach writing them.
• Someone who introduced a lasting improvement to a team and can explain its cost.
• Comfort with recommending changes that affect how people work, and handling resulting friction.
• Ability to assess which changes require heavy review based on system behavior.
• Track record of building tools and features actually used by the team.
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents, not just personal practices.
• Product design intuition, user empathy, and a drive to push Android UI/UX beyond the spec.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, from design to release, in collaboration with the design team.
• Maintain and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide constructive feedback.
• Unblock the team when progress stalls and take a hands-on approach.
• Lead changes so the team uses a unified version of a feature or component.
• Keep shared code and components well-documented and maintainable.
• Proactively shift verification left and ensure nightly builds are confirms, not first findings.
• Plan sprints so the team focuses on undecided work rather than what's obvious.
• Balance review workload and streamline collaboration with Product, Design, and Engineering.
• Handle critical issues, own feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers and provide learning opportunities.
