Job summary

Speechify is seeking a remote Team Lead for Android to own major features from concept to release. You will write code, review peers, and drive features while ensuring reliability and fast delivery in a distributed team.

Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering to ship high-quality audio and UI experiences. You will mentor junior engineers and push Android UX beyond the spec, maintaining a hands-on approach throughout.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including time leading a team or owning a major surface while staying hands-on.
• Rock solid Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background work.
• Understanding of the importance of tests and how to approach writing them.
• A track record of building things the rest of your team actually used.
• Ability to describe how your team works with AI agents.
• Product design intuition and user empathy for Android UI/UX.

Responsibilities

• Own major features end to end, working closely with our design team — from the decision through to release.
• Own, maintain, and improve reliability metrics for key features.
• Review pull requests and provide insightful feedback.
• Unblock the team when someone is stuck and ensure efficient progress.
• Drive changes so that a single build becomes the team’s standard.
• Keep shared code in good shape, tested, and easy to hand off.
• Lead changes in process when the team is ready, not sooner.
• Reduce manual intervention to ensure correct releases.
• Address repeated problems by changing underlying setup.
• Shift verification left with automated checks for QA nightly builds.
• Plan sprints so attention focuses on undecided work.
• Assess review workload and escalation routines.
• Participate in discussions across Product, Design, and Engineering early.
• Handle critical issues and releases, provide nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers and give them learning opportunities.
